Ever wonder which U.S. cities have the highest percentages of wealthy households? You’ll find most of them in one state.
Among the top 50 cities for percentage of households earning $200,000+ a year (minimum 25,000 households), a whopping 26 are located in California. The next closest states — Texas and Washington — each place only four cities in the top 50.
Among those top 50 cities, percentages of households earning 200,000+ range from 26% to more than 50%.
Reduce the minimum households to 500, and California still dominates with 14 of the top 50. That easily tops runner-up New York, which has 7 of the top 50. New Jersey, Texas and Virginia each have five. In the No. 1 city on the list, nearly 83% of households top the $200,000 mark.
These figures are based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, last conducted in 2022.
Here’s a look at each list, including total households, along with the percentage of those households meeting the $200,000 annual threshold.
