Some of the rarest coins have sold for millions at major auctions, and according to Heritage Auctions, its August American Numismatic Association events alone brought in more than $68 million.
Even smaller sales can fetch impressive sums when collectors are chasing something special, as research from SD Bullion found. The study looked at eBay sales from March through May 2025 to see which gold and silver coins sold for in that period.
From British showpieces to American bullion tubes, these six coins all broke the $40,000 mark.
Great Engravers: Waterloo

The 1-kilogram Royal Mint gold coin tops the list, having sold on May 1 for more than three times the amount the next-highest coin went for. Limited edition and highly collectible, it celebrates the Battle of Waterloo with detailed engravings.

It was graded AU55 by PCGS, which means “about uncirculated.” Coins at this level have only slight wear and still keep much of their original shine, and as most coins from the 1700s are worn down, finding one in this condition is rare.
