Gen Z is doing travel a bit differently than earlier generations. “Gen Z travelers are redefining tourism by searching for places that align with their values and interests, offering immersion in culture, a mix of affordability and sustainability,” explained Justin Crabbe, a travel expert and CEO of Jettly

Of course, affordability is a key ingredient in that mix. Where are the hot spots that meet Gen Z’s travel criteria without breaking the bank? Here’s a look at some destinations travel experts have seen Gen Z travel to the most.

Also see seven money moves Gen Z must make now if they want to travel in retirement.

Lisbon, Portugal

Crabbe pointed out that Gen Z loves international travel. “According to one of our recent studies, Gen Z is the most likely generation to plan international flights this holiday season,” he said.

Crabbe explained that Portugal — and specifically Lisbon — makes the list because it keeps costs relatively low while still offering a lot for young travelers to explore “Portugal is a favorite for affordable, yet luxurious European allure, with surf-ready beaches, vibrant art scenes and digital-nomad-friendly hubs like Lisbon catering to their love of freedom and community,” he explained.

Tim Choate, founder and CEO of RedAwning, agreed that Lisbon is one of Gen Z’s top picks. “For its walkable areas, historical appeal and active digital nomad community, Lisbon is well-liked. Gen Z loves places like these where they can really experience culture while sharing about pastel-colored buildings and sunsets above the Tagus River,” he said.

Tulum, Mexico

Crabbe said that, though they have an interest in international travel, some Gen Zers aren’t straying too far from home. “The cultural dynamism of Mexico — centered around experiences such as lighthearted Day of the Dead celebrations to exploring ancient ruins in Tulum at affordable prices, is attracting Gen Z,” he said.

Choate agreed, saying Tulum gives a luxe experience at a great price. “Tulum offers a fascinating personal story. Its blend of environmentally friendly lodging and bohemian ambiance appeals to Gen Z budget-conscious guests even if it is known for luxury,” he explained. “Young visitors have been giving stays in off-grid, sustainable vacation houses first priority, even while they indulge in experiences such as yoga retreats or cenote swimming.”

Puerto Escondido, Mexico

Another Mexican favorite is Puerto Escondido. Alonso Marly, a travel expert at Skylux Travel, explained this is because it has a bohemian vibe with plenty of things to do. “Puerto Escondido offers you everything from snorkeling, swimming among the marine life, seeing dolphins in their natural habitat, trying out sport fishing, releasing newborn turtles and taking surf lessons to exploring the nearby beaches, such as Huatulco and the Bay of Carrizalillo,” he said.

Marly added that eating out is cheap, too, and might cost only $5 to $10 per person at midrange restaurants in Puerto Escondido.

Sumba, Indonesia

Marly explained that Bali is out for Gen Z and Sumba is in.

“Bali has been among the most trendy holiday spots; however, since it is not as peaceful and untouched as it once was, many vacationers are now looking for new, undiscovered and less crowded tropical destinations that offer better value for money,” he said. “Known for its rugged coastline, exotic beaches, breathtaking natural landscapes, unique traditions and rich history, Sumba is a truly spectacular island in Indonesia that has recently started to attract Gen Z tourists who are after an exotic escape.”
