As summer travel season approaches, many Americans are planning their road trips. Whether they’re going on a day trip to the beach or taking a drive across the country, they’ll need their cars to be in tip-top shape. 

But what repairs are the most important to prioritize and how much should you be willing to spend on them? GOBankingRates got in touch with some car mechanics and auto experts about the repairs you should consider before summer starts and how much you should be willing to spend on them. 

Here are five money-saving car upgrades to make before summer.

Coolant Flush

The first thing you should consider for your car as summer approaches is a coolant flush. “Overheating is a common summer breakdown issue,” according to John Lin, a seasoned mechanic and co-founder of JB Motor Works.

“Maintaining your car’s cooling system is crucial, especially during the summer when the engine is under increased stress,” said Joyce Gutierrez, an automotive expert for 4WheelOnline. “A properly functioning cooling system helps prevent overheating and ensures your vehicle runs efficiently.”

One key aspect of cooling system maintenance is regularly flushing the radiator, Gutierrez explained. “Over time, the coolant can become contaminated with rust, scale and other debris, reducing its ability to transfer heat effectively. Experts recommend flushing the radiator and replacing the coolant every 30,000 miles or as specified in your owner’s manual,” she said.

“A coolant flush for $100-150 is cheap insurance,” Lin said. “I’ve seen too many people stranded on the side of the road with smoke pouring out.”

Tire Rotation or Replacement

There are four things that are easy and fairly cheap to replace on your car before you hit the road this summer: your car’s tires.

“Evenly worn tires provide better traction, handling and fuel efficiency for those long road trips,” Lin said. He estimated that the average consumer will spend about $50 to $100 to get a tire rotation done, but “it’s one of the best bang-for-your-buck services.”

“Upgrading to fuel-efficient tires can substantially boost gas mileage, saving you money at the pump,” Gutierrez said. “Low-rolling resistance tires are designed with materials and tread patterns that minimize the energy lost as the tire rolls. This reduced rolling resistance translates to improved fuel economy, with some estimates showing a 1%-2% increase in MPG. It can mean an extra 50-100 miles per tank for the average driver.”

“If your current tires are worn or need replacement, consider upgrading to a summer tire upgrade focused on low-rolling resistance,” Gutierrez explained. “Many major tire brands now offer budget-friendly options for fuel efficiency and reliable performance. Check your vehicle’s recommended tire size and load rating when shopping for replacements.”

Brake Check

The brakes on your car are crucial no matter what season, but they are often overlooked during the warm summer months.

“Ensuring your brakes are in top condition is crucial for safety. Worn brake pads or malfunctioning brake systems can lead to accidents,” said Stamatis Zotos, a professional mechanic and owner of Zotos Rent A Car.

“Replacing brake pads typically costs between $150-$300 per axle, while more extensive repairs can reach up to $1,000,” Zotos said. “Never skimp on brakes. Your safety and the safety of others depend on them.”

Exterior Protection

“As the summer heat bears down, it’s crucial to safeguard your car’s exterior,” Gutierrez said. “The intense sun and high temperatures can wreak havoc on your vehicle’s paint, causing fading, cracking and other unsightly damage.”

One effective way to shield your car is through regular detailing and waxing, in Gutierrez’s professional opinion. “A high-quality wax creates a protective barrier that helps block harmful UV rays and prevent oxidation,” she explained. “When choosing a wax, look for products designed specifically for summer conditions that can withstand the heat.

“While the upfront cost may be higher, the long-term benefits of preserving your car’s appearance make it a worthwhile investment.”

Windshield and Glass Care

One easy upgrade for your car this summer is to replace the windshield wipers and fluids as the weather heats up. “For $20-$30 you can ensure clear visibility during those sudden summer thunderstorms,” Lin said. “It’s a no-brainer safety upgrade.”

As the sun does shine down, you might need an extra layer of protection. Gutierrez recommended installing tinted windows as a solution. “They provide an effective barrier against the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, offering important protection for you and your passengers,” she said. “Window tinting is a simple and affordable way to block up to 99% of UV radiation from entering your car. This helps prevent sun damage to your skin and protects your vehicle’s interior from fading and cracking over time.”

“While prices can vary, investing in quality tinting, typically ranging from $200 to $600 for a full-vehicle treatment, is a decision you won’t regret,” Gutierrez explained.

While tinted windows may seem like a pricy upgrade, they’re a worthwhile investment. “The long-term benefits of protecting you and your car from the sun’s damaging effects will leave you confident and satisfied with your investment,” Gutierrez said.
