Have you ever thought about shopping for groceries at discount retailers to save money? According to a June 2024 GOBankingRates survey, nearly 55% of Americans said they don’t purchase groceries at dollar stores.
However, the remaining 45% of Americans polled said they go to dollar stores for groceries. It’s easy to see why dollar store chains like Dollar Tree are preferred when you conduct price comparisons on their grocery offerings to those sold at big-box retailers and supermarkets.
GOBankingRates carefully reviewed Dollar Tree’s grocery inventory and compared the prices to similar offerings at Walmart and Aldi to find out which Dollar Tree groceries are better deals.Â
You might be surprised which groceries are way cheaper at Dollar Tree.
Marcel’s Modern Pantry Unsweetened Almond Milk
- Price: $1.25
Dollar Tree may have cornered the market for the cheapest almond milk.
The closest dupe at Walmart, Almond Breeze unsweetened 32-ounce vanilla almond milk, costs $2.19. Every dollar counts on a tight grocery budget and Dollar Tree shoppers save nearly $1 picking up their almond milk at the dollar store.
Old Orchard Apple Cranberry Juice
- Price: $1.25
Old Orchard’s apple cranberry juice is much cheaper at Dollar Tree than it is with similarly sized offerings sold elsewhere.
Nature’s Nectar cranberry apple juice is $3.19 for 64 ounces at Aldi while a 64-ounce bottle of Ocean Spray Cran-Apple juice costs $3.36 at Walmart.
Harvest Hill Pancake Syrup
- Price: $1.25
For the cheapest 24-ounce bottle of pancake syrup, Dollar Tree is a grocery shopper’s go-to with its Harvest Hill brand.Â
Similarly sized offerings are much more expensive elsewhere. Aldi’s Millville pancake syrup brand is $2.75 per bottle while the Aunt Jemima brand sold at Walmart is $3.83.
Golden Chef Vegetable Oil
Hunt’s Tomato Ketchup
- Price: $1.25
Settle this debate: which retailer carries Hunt’s ketchup at the lowest price?
Aldi is eliminated from this round since they do not carry Hunt’s brand. This leaves Dollar Tree versus Walmart. A 14-ounce bottle of Hunt’s is $1.25 at Dollar Tree. The same brand and size costs $2.48 at Walmart. Dollar Tree for the win!
Global Brands Select Soup & Oyster Crackers
- Price:Â $1.25
We were pleasantly surprised at how much of a bargain soup and oyster crackers are at Dollar Tree.
At Walmart, a 9-ounce bag of Premium soup and oyster crackers costs $3.86. In comparison, Dollar Tree shoppers get three more ounces of crackers with Global Brands and save over $2.50 on their purchases.
Everyday Salt and Pepper Set
- Price:Â $1.25
Sometimes going on a grocery run means restocking kitchen staples like salt and pepper. Shoppers who want to grab this duo at the cheapest price will find the most affordable option for sale at Dollar Tree with the Everyday brand.
Walmart carries the Morton Salt salt and pepper set for $2.44, about a dollar more than what shoppers would pay at Dollar Tree.
Fudge Striped Shortbread Cookies
- Price: $1.25
Dollar Tree, Walmart and Aldi all offer competitive prices on fudge-striped shortbread cookies, so let’s see who has the cheapest cookies for sale.
Walmart carries the Keebler brand for $2.98 and the Great Value brand for $2.12. Both are more expensive than Dollar Tree and in slightly smaller 11.5-ounce packaging.Â
Aldi comes close to winning the cheap shortbread cookie competition with its Benton’s brand for $1.80 per 13-ounce package. However, this still costs more than what shoppers would get at Dollar Tree.
