With the holiday season lurking around the corner, it can be easy to find yourself spending a few more dollars than you budgeted with all of the exciting deals that tend to come out. Businesses are aware that this is the time of year you’re likely to spend most, so they have extra tempting things for sale — and Target in particular is known for impulse buys that are hard to resist even outside the holiday season.

While there may be some great deals to be had, there are some items that are not worth it. Here are the little luxuries to skip at Target this holiday season — but if you do want to treat yourself at Target, take a look at these holiday buys under $20 that are worth it.

Seasonal Décor

While that cute little snowman mug may catch your eye, or you’re convinced that you need a new holiday table runner, these items are often not worth the high price tag that comes along with them. Remember that seasonal décor is typically only used for a few weeks during the holiday season and will likely end up sitting in your closet or garage for the rest of the year.

Instead, try to choose more versatile decorative pieces that can still be used throughout the year, or wait for the post-holiday sales to stock up on decorations for next year.

Fancy Gift Wrap

Target always has a beautiful selection of gift wraps available during the holidays, but don’t be distracted by all of the bows and glitter. While it is gorgeous, buying fancy wrapping paper, bows, ribbons and labels can easily drive up your budget and cost more than the actual gift itself. Consider only buying one pattern, or even repurposing brown paper bags or old newspapers for a unique look to your presents.

Pre-Made Christmas Sets

During the holidays, you’ll see pre-made gift sets available on nearly every aisle. These can range from things like Dove shampoo and a loofah to tree-shaped lip gloss containers. Typically, the prices of these little kits are not worth the actual value of the product.

If you find one that you like, look for similar items being sold individually. Then, you can create your own little gift set instead of paying the extra fee to have it in pretty packaging.

Linens

If you need a room refresh, try waiting until the start of the year instead of the holidays. In January, Target often has sales on comforters, sheets, towels and other bedding. Instead of paying full price during the holiday season, hold off for just a few more weeks.

The Bottom Line

While there are definitely some great deals to be found at Target during the holidays, it’s important to be mindful of where you’re spending your money. By skipping out on some of these little luxuries, you can save yourself some money and ensure that you’re getting the best deal possible.
