We all crave a little indulgence now and then, whether it’s that fancy coffee, a relaxing spa day, or a nice dinner out.

But, in today’s high-cost world, keeping up with the cost of life can make it feel like those little luxuries are out of reach.

The good news? You don’t have to give them up entirely — with a few simple tweaks and a little planning, you can enjoy those small pleasures without breaking the bank.

Find Strategic Approaches for Enjoying Luxuries Without Financial Stress

“Small indulgences are vital for mental well-being and motivation in a sound financial plan,” said Kevin Shahnazari, founder and CEO of FinlyWealth.

He recommends that his clients allocate 5-10% of their monthly budget specifically for “joy spending” –those small luxuries that make life enjoyable without jeopardizing financial goals.

This intentional allocation prevents both guilt and overspending, creating a sustainable approach to treating yourself.

“When I first started my career, I struggled with financial guilt whenever I spent money on anything beyond necessities,” said Shahnazari.

For this reason, he created what he refers to as a “luxury allowance,” a separate account funded monthly with a predetermined amount solely for treats and small indulgences.

This method transformed Shahnazari’s relationship with spending, allowing him to enjoy a premium coffee or occasional concert ticket completely guilt-free because these expenses were planned for, not taking away from essential savings or bills.

Maximize Credit Card Rewards for Luxury Experiences

Credit card rewards can fund many small luxuries without affecting your budget.

Shahnazari said his clients often accumulate points throughout the year from everyday spending, then use these rewards for special treats like hotel upgrades, restaurant gift cards, or merchandise they wouldn’t normally purchase.

This strategy effectively creates a “free” luxury fund separate from your main budget.

“I used this approach to treat my family to a weekend getaway last year. By strategically using a travel rewards card for our regular household expenses throughout the year, we generated enough points to cover a two-night hotel stay that would have otherwise cost $600.”

He said the trip felt especially rewarding because they enjoyed this luxury without spending additional money from their core budget.

Time Luxury Purchases for Maximum Value

Strategic timing dramatically increases how many luxuries you can enjoy on the same budget.

Shahnazari advised tracking preferred luxury items throughout the year and purchasing during predictable sale periods.

This approach, he explained, can stretch your luxury budget by 30-40% annually while still getting exactly what you want.

“Last holiday season, I helped a client create a ‘luxury calendar’ where we mapped out when her favorite brands typically offer major discounts.”

The client wanted to upgrade several home items but couldn’t afford them all at full price. By spacing purchases throughout the year during strategic sales periods, he said she acquired every item on her wishlist while staying within her budget parameters.

Find Hidden Luxury in Everyday Experiences

One powerful technique Shahnazari recommended is “luxury stacking” — combining several small, affordable elements to create a premium experience.

This might mean creating a spa night at home with quality bath products and candles instead of paying for an expensive spa visit, or hosting a gourmet dinner party using specialty ingredients that cost far less than restaurant prices for the same meal.

“I practice this regularly by transforming ordinary evenings into special occasions. Rather than spending [more than] $100 at a steakhouse, I’ll purchase a premium cut of meat ($20), pair it with a quality but affordable wine ($15), and create a restaurant-quality presentation.”

He said the experience feels luxurious but costs a fraction of the restaurant price while developing valuable culinary skills.

Overall, he explained that financial responsibility doesn’t mean eliminating joy — it means creating intentional space for it.

“When we plan for small luxuries, they become sustainable parts of our financial lives rather than sources of stress or guilt.”
