If your data was breached as part of the 2023 MOVEit hack, you may be eligible for up to $12,500 in reimbursements. And even if you didn’t lose anything in the hack, you still might be able to get $100.

Here’s what you need to know about the National Student Clearinghouse settlement — and if you are getting a check, here are the best things you can do with it.

What Is the National Student Clearinghouse?

The National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) is a nonprofit organization that helps students, educational institutions and employers access educational data. The NSC is designed to provide verification for employers of your education credentials, exchange of student data between institutions and educational research.

What Is the 2023 MOVEit hack?

The MOVEit platform is managed by the NSC and stores your data for access by your school, your employer and the government. In 2023, a Russian cybergang accessed files on the NSC MOVEit platform, which included sensitive personal information, including Social Security numbers.

This hack affected more than 2,700 organizations that store information on the MOVEit platform. You may have received a letter about the MOVEit hack if your data was determined to be compromised.

How Much Is the NSC Settlement?

While admitting no wrongdoing, the NSC has agreed to a $9.95 million settlement to help victims of the cyberattack. This money will be distributed based on the impact of the cyberattack to specific individuals.

Here’s how it will break down:

  • Up to $2,500 for ordinary losses. If someone stole your information and it caused you to lose money — and time — you may be eligible for up to $2,500. These losses may include money lost, bank fees, communication charges the cost of credit monitoring and up to $100 for time spent at a rate of $25 per hour.
  • Up to $10,000 for large losses. If you lost even more due to this hack, you can claim an additional $10,000 for extraordinary losses. This can include unreimbursed money lost, fraud damages, lawyer fees, credit repair costs and other professional fees.
  • $100 flat rate to others. If you received a letter about the breach but didn’t experience any loss, you may still be eligible for a $100 cash payment.

Those who qualify for reimbursement for both ordinary and large losses could receive up to $12,500.

In addition to payment or reimbursement, you may also be entitled to two years of credit monitoring and identity theft protection.

Who Is Entitled to the NSC Settlement?

The NSC Settlement is available to anyone who was a victim of the 2023 MOVEit data breach. You most likely received a letter about the class action lawsuit and settlement from NSC, but if you didn’t, you can contact the Settlement Administrator to confirm your eligibility.

The administrator is Epiq Class Action & Claims Solutions, Inc. You can reach them directly at 888-366-9156.

How Can I Get Money From the NSC Settlement?
