According to a survey conducted by Research!America, 60% of Americans cite cost as the top barrier to healthier eating. Despite the finding that 77% of Americans want to eat healthier, 46% found it at least somewhat hard to regularly obtain and eat nutritious foods over the last 12 months.

With cost cited as the top factor, finding places to purchase healthy food for less is an important method for eating healthier while staying within your budget.

Costco is a great place to find deals on healthy food, making a better diet more attainable financially. Here are some ways Costco can help you eat healthy on a budget.

Bone Broth

Bone broth is a great source of protein and can be consumed by itself or used to add protein to soups or other meals. Costco sells organic chicken sipping bone broth that costs $23.15 for six 32-ounce containers. It could cost more than $40 to get the equivalent amount of bone broth from other sites. For example, the same item can be bought at Walmart for $39.73.

Kombucha

Kombucha contains probiotics that help improve gut health, but stocking up can get expensive. That’s where Costco comes in. Costco sells the Humm organic mango passion kombucha for $10.17 for eight cans. That’s the equivalent of $1.27 per can. Other stores charge between $3 and $4 per can. For example, Walmart sells a 12-pack of Humm kombucha cans for $36, which comes out to $3 per can.

Sparkling Beverages

Replacing soda or other sugary beverages with sparkling beverages can help reduce sugar intake and lead to better health. And if you buy them at Costco, it could help your budget.

Costco stocks Waterloo, La Croix and Kirkland sparkling water brands, among others, and you can likely find them for less than you can at Target or Walmart.

For example, Costco is selling a 24-count variety pack of La Croix sparkling water on sale for $8.53 right now. Target is selling an eight-pack for $4.19. Breaking that down by can, shoppers will spend almost $0.36 per can at Costco and $0.52 per can at Target.

Meat

Meat, whether chicken, beef or pork, supplies protein and essential nutrients for a healthy diet. But meat can get expensive. According to Allrecipes, Costco’s meat prices tend to be lower than traditional grocery stores.

And the best part is that even if you buy it fresh, you can still freeze it for use later.

Sweet Treats

Even the healthiest diets need to include a sweet treat every now and then.

Costco offers a selection of treats, including Perfect Bar and Magic Spoon protein bars, which are both around $23 for 12 to 14 bars. Costco sells a 14-pack of Magic Spoon protein bars in double chocolate and chocolate peanut butter flavors for $23.15. Walmart sells an eight-pack of chocolate peanut butter bars for $22.99. That’s almost the same price for fewer bars.

Editor’s note: Pricing and availability may vary depending on location.
