You might think that shopping at dollar stores guarantees a good deal, but sometimes items don’t deliver the best value. At Halloween, however, it can pay off to shop there for items that beat prices at places like Walmart or Amazon.
Here are a handful of Halloween buys found at Dollar Tree and Dollar General that are worth the trip.

Hershey’s Assorted Caramel Lover’s Candy
- Price: $10.00
If you belong to the camp that gives out chocolate on Halloween, you’ll love this Dollar General deal on Hershey’s Assorted Caramel Lover’s Candy. Grab one or more of these 19.9-ounce bags of caramel treats, including Reese’s Take 5, Rolo, Milk Duds and Payday. The price comes out to about $0.50 per ounce, which is about $0.05 per ounce less than what Walmart is selling a slightly smaller bag of the same candy for.

Printed Halloween Pail
- Price: $1.50
Depart from the ordinary candy pail and do something different — and cheaper — this Halloween. Dollar Tree has an assortment of printed 9.45-inch Halloween pails for $1.50 each. To compare, a smaller orange jack-o’-lantern candy pail at Walmart costs $1.97. Another advantage of opting for the Dollar Tree pails is that they come in five assorted styles, which means each kid can have their own design, which reduces the risk of mix-ups.

Tootsie Roll Pops Minis
- Price: $4.50
Get a lot more bang for your Halloween candy buck at Dollar General by buying a 75-count package of Tootsie Roll Pops Minis for $4.50. That’s about $0.33 per ounce. On Amazon, a 200-count pack of the same candy is priced at $25.59, or $0.51 per ounce. To put it into perspective, three Dollar General bags cost $13.50 and give you 225 pops, compared to 200 pops for $25.59 on Amazon — that’s 25 more pops for about $12 less.

Plastic Halloween Wind-Up Hopping Toys
- Price: $1.50
If you need some cute items for boo baskets this year, you can pick up Halloween wind-up hopping toys at Dollar Tree for just $1.50 each. You can find these same sorts of toys on Amazon in a 24-count bulk pack for a cheaper per-unit price — about $1.00 each — but if you don’t need that many, you can spend less overall at Dollar Tree.
