Most of us have wondered at some point how we stack up financially against our peers — including people who live near us.
A recent state-by-state analysis from GOBankingRates reveals how Americans compare financially to their neighbors. The analysis offers a detailed look at retirement savings, home values, household income and the annual cost of living across all 50 states. The findings highlight some dramatic regional differences.
For example, residents of Mississippi face one of the lowest annual costs of living at $68,541 but also report one of the lowest average retirement savings balances at $347,884. In contrast, Connecticut retirees have saved an average of $545,754 — well above the national average — yet still contend with a cost of living exceeding $109,000 annually. California, Hawaii and Massachusetts top the list for most expensive states, while West Virginia, Arkansas and Kentucky rank among the most affordable.
To compile its state-by-state breakdown, GOBankingRates blended data from the U.S. Census, the Missouri Economic Research and Information Center, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Zillow and the Federal Reserve. See how you compare to the average person in your state and others.

Methodology: For this study, GOBankingRates conducted a comprehensive analysis of all 50 U.S. states to compare individual circumstances against statewide averages, using data from the 2024 1-year U.S. Census American Community Survey. Key metrics included total population, households, age demographics (65+) and labor force participation (16+). Cost-of-living indexes were sourced from the Missouri Economic Research and Information Center, while national average expenditure data came from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Expenditure Survey. These indexes were applied to expenditure data to estimate average spending by state. Housing costs were derived from Zillow’s Home Value Index, assuming a 10% down payment and the national average 30-year fixed mortgage rate from Federal Reserve Economic Data, enabling calculation of average mortgage costs per state. Combining mortgage and expenditure estimates yielded the total cost of necessities. Applying the 50/30/20 budgeting rule — where necessities should not exceed 50% of income — researchers doubled the necessities cost to determine the annual income required for comfortable living. All data was compiled on Oct. 20, 2025.
