You already know a dollar can’t buy what it used to in the United States. And it turns out that a million dollars just isn’t enough in many cases.
Here’s a look at four things that are even out of reach of low-level millionaires.
Superyachts
Yes, low-level millionaires can find deals on older yacht models. But we’re talking about superyachts here. “Most people define a superyacht as a vessel used for pleasure, which is larger than 24m (80ft) and has full-time captain and crew employed all year round,” according to Burgess Yachts.
And one of these will cost you. “The cost of one of these luxury yachts can range from a few million dollars to hundreds of millions, depending on its size, amenities, and overall quality,” per Galati Yacht Sales.
As you might guess, the luxuries that come with a superyacht also come with a big price tag. According to Business Insider, “From yacht crew salaries and dockage to fuel and maintenance costs, owners can expect to spend about 10% of the purchase price annually on operating and maintaining a yacht.”
Private Jets
If you’ve ever felt bad about not being able to afford your own private jet, at least you know you’re in good company.
Buying one will cost you at least $2 million for the smallest of private jets, according to research from Volato. That price tag, plus to upkeep and other costs, typically makes private jets out of reach for low-level millionaires. In addition to things like fuel and maintenance, there are also pilot salaries and hangar fees to consider.
Full-Time House Staffs
Again, many millionaires are able to afford having some help around the house — but a full staff is probably out of the question. “A full-time staff would include a chief of staff, management team, butler, assistant, chef, housekeeper, nanny, tutor, chauffeur, and houseman,” according to Business Insider.
For someone who has that level of staffing, it’s going to likely cost a couple of million dollars a year. That does not include bonuses and health benefits.
Doomsday Bunkers
Unfortunately, even having a few million dollars isn’t going to be enough to get a high-end doomsday bunker. In fact, they’re even called billionaire bunkers because of the high prices.
Before you drop your jaw at the $20 million price tag for some of these bunkers, think about how much more they have in them than regular homes. For instance, you’ll find bunkers with movie theaters, pools, climbing walls and dog parks. After all, no one wants an uncomfortable doomsday bunker.
