Warren Buffett is sitting on an estimated $168 billion fortune, making him the fifth-richest person on the planet. After sixty years of leading Berkshire Hathaway, the conglomerate he’s built since 1965, the 94-year-old stepped down from the company last month.

GOBankingRates unpacks the enormous wealth the Oracle of Omaha has accumulated over his career as he shifts into his golden years.

What Makes Up Buffett’s Wealth?

Berkshire Hathaway started out as a textile manufacturer. Today, it is one of the largest companies within the S&P 500. Berkshire’s collection of businesses is vastly diverse today, ranging from insurance to chocolates to running shoes. Apple, which Berkshire partially owns, accounts for almost 25% of Berkshire’s roughly $288 billion stock portfolio

The Oracle of Omaha owns about 15% to 18% of the company that is worth $900 billion. Private investments, cash reserves and stock moves have added to his fortune.

In contrast to many billionaires who seem more interested in volatile tech stocks, Buffett’s portfolio may appear quite mundane. His portfolio includes insurance companies, railroads and consumer brands — staying calm through numerous changes like inflation scares, rough stock markets and trade wars.

What’s Next for Buffett?

Greg Abel, 52, will succeed Buffett as CEO on Jan. 1, 2026, and Buffett will continue his role as chairman. According to The Street, the longtime businessman and star-studded investor still plans to go into the office, keep giving his vast wealth to charity and providing the world with his famous personal finance and investing advice.
