A butler and a housekeeper sound like good family additions after stressful work days. For most of us, that’s not likely to happen anytime soon. However, if you’re thinking about joining the ranks of personal staffers attending to the needs of the world’s richest families, there might be good news. Some places where billionaires like to live have seen increased demand for personal staffers. Or, as the Daily Beast reports, “Post-COVID, there’s a new reality in billionaire land: Either pay up or clean up yourself.”
Soaring Salaries
One place where the demand has increased is the Hamptons. Wealthy individuals and families moved there during the pandemic – which meant they wanted personal staffers.
The increased demand also has sent salaries soaring in many cases. That means a salaried housekeeper who previously made around $65,000 can now demand $85,000 in the ballpark. Nannies and estate managers have also seen dramatic salary increases – well into the six figures.
Specialized Staffers
One other change in recent years is the search for more niche personal staffers. As the Washington Post reports, this includes some billionaires hiring a chief of staff instead of a personal assistant or bringing on a nanny who specializes in something important to the family, such as skiing.
Some of the other requests, according to the Washington Post, include “…drivers with a police background, firearm training and a concealed-carry permit; a housekeeper who is also an illustrious laundress; a chef capable of cooking for a family of four with four different dietary requirements; and, perhaps, an architecture tutor who can travel with a precocious child.”
Of course, with more specialized training and certain backgrounds comes higher salaries. Here’s a look at some of the annual pay:
- Housekeepers: $120,000
- Butlers: $170,000-200,000
- Chefs: $400,000
A few factors are important to keep in mind here. These are only examples of what some families are willing to pay for certain positions. Location also matters when it comes to salaries – and competition for your services can also drive your pay way up.
