Writer and comedian Donald Glover, better known to music fans by his stage name Childish Gambino, broke onto the scene as a writer for “30 Rock” and then as Troy on the NBC comedy “Community.” He’s having a bit of a moment in 2018, with a hit TV show, a successful appearance hosting “Saturday Night Live,” a role in a “Star Wars” movie and a new album in the works.
Read on to find out how this multitalented star is making major money.
Donald Glover Net Worth: $12M
Donald Glover has a net worth of $12 million. He’s become a triple threat writer-actor-musician who continues to roll out new projects on a regular basis. If his role as the young Lando Calrissian in “Solo: A Star Wars Story” proves to be a breakthrough, however, Glover could find himself soon commanding a much higher price for future projects.
Donald Glover Television
Prior to 2018, the bulk of Glover’s career has been in television. Glover had some success on YouTube with his sketch troupe Derrick Comedy while attending New York University. Before he graduated, he was hired as a writer for “30 Rock” in 2006. He worked there as a writer and executive story editor until 2009 when he was cast as former high school football star Troy Barnes in the Dan Harmon series “Community.”
Soon after, Glover’s first stand-up comedy special — a half-hour episode of “Comedy Central Presents” — premiered on Comedy Central in 2010. That was followed up by an hourlong special — “Donald Glover: Weirdo” — in 2012.
Glover left “Community” after the fifth season in 2014, but he returned to the small screen on FX with the critically acclaimed “Atlanta” in 2016, for which he won the Emmys for outstanding lead actor and directing in a comedy series. Glover is the creator and head writer for the show, in which he also stars as Earnest Marks, a young father struggling to make something of himself by becoming the manager of his cousin, a semi-successful rapper. The second season of “Atlanta” began airing in 2018.
In May 2018, Glover impressed when he hosted “Saturday Night Live” — a show he unsuccessfully auditioned for twice — and was also the musical guest as Childish Gambino.
Donald Glover Movies
Glover’s movie credits have been smaller than his TV projects but he’s gaining more high-profile roles. His first film was 2009’s “Mystery Team,” which he also co-wrote with his Derrick Comedy co-stars. Since then, Glover has appeared mostly in supporting roles, including ones for “The Muppets,” “The To Do List,” “Magic Mike XXL,” “The Martian” and “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”
Glover’s upcoming film work appears to be a major step up for him, however, as he’s playing the young Lando Calrissian in the next installment of the “Star Wars” franchise, “Solo: A Star Wars Story.” He’s also slated to voice Simba in the live-action “The Lion King” set for release in 2019.
Childish Gambino New Album
Glover has also managed to create a successful career as a rapper and musician. His first album under the Childish Gambino moniker — a name he got from the Wu-Tang Name Generator — was “Camp” in 2011, followed by “Because the Internet” in 2013 and “Awaken, My Love!” in 2016.
He had two Grammy nominations at the 2015 ceremony but received five nominations at the 2018 Grammy Awards, where he won for best traditional R&B performance for “Redbone” and performed “Terrified” from “Awaken, My Love!”
Anticipation is building for the release of his next — and rumored potentially his last — album. On the same night of his appearance as the musical guest on “Saturday Night Live” where he debuted two new songs, Childish Gambino released the video for “This Is America” to rave reviews. The video racked up more than 111 million views on YouTube within just over a week of its release.
