Oprah Winfrey struck it rich with her long-running talk show and then parlayed that success into a media empire that has earned her a net worth of $3 billion, according to Forbes. Winfrey has used that wealth to build a real estate portfolio that could be worth nearly $200 million.

Winfrey’s real estate transactions can be hard to track because some occur off-market, which means the properties aren’t listed in the multiple listing service. In addition, Winfrey has owned properties through corporate entities rather than in her name. However, press reports and reports from luxury real estate watchers say her current portfolio currently includes properties in California, Hawaii and Colorado. Here’s a look at Oprah Winfrey’s real estate portfolio.

Montecito, California

Winfrey’s primary home is thought to be her sprawling estate in Montecito, California. Purchased in 2001 for $50 million, according to Realtor.com, the 23,000-square-foot neo-Georgian home has six bedrooms and 15 baths and sits on over 40 acres.

The estate, which Winfrey named “The Promised Land,” includes such luxuries as a tennis court, pool, movie theater and what Elle Decor described as a 6,000-square-foot guest house. The 2015 purchase of a $28.8 million neighboring equestrian estate, Seamair Farm, added stables to The Promised Land’s amenities.

Winfrey further expanded the estate with the purchase of a home on four acres owned by Jeff Bridges and his wife, Susan Geston, in 2019. The Los Angeles Times reported at the time that Winfrey paid $6.85 million for the complex, and it valued the full estate at about $90 million — a figure likely to be significantly higher today.

Kula, Hawaii

Winfrey has been investing in Maui real estate since the early 2000s. She already owned over 100 acres of land and a number of buildings in Kula, Hawaii, when KITV4 reported in March 2023 that she’d just purchased an 870-acre ranch.

KHON2 in Hawaii estimated the value of Winfrey’s Maui properties to be about $60 million after inflation and renovations. The properties include a farmhouse, situated on one of Winfrey’s earlier land purchases. Winfrey initially intended to do a quick renovation and then build the “ultimate Hawaii homestead,” as Oprah.com reported in 2006. However, with the help of designer Ellie Cullman, Winfrey had contractors essentially gut the home to move a staircase, raise the primary bedroom ceiling and construct a wraparound veranda that gives Winfrey sweeping ocean views from her primary suite.

Mountain Village and Telluride, Colorado

Winfrey owns two separate properties in Colorado: 66 acres in Mountain Village, which she purchased for $10.85 million in 2014, and a $14 million home in Telluride, purchased a year later. She reportedly intended to live in the Telluride home temporarily while building a new home in Mountain Village.

The Mountain Village project never came to fruition, but Realtor.com described the Telluride home as a “high-tech mansion” with a glass and steel bridge over the great room and a cable rail car and observation tower on the grounds.

Properties Previously Owned by Winfrey

The properties listed above are Winfrey’s current portfolio, but she has owned many other notable properties in the past. For example:

  • Mondroneagle, an $8.3 million 40-acre estate on Orcas Island, Washington. Winfrey reportedly sold Mondroneagle for $14 million in 2021.
  • Montecito/Santa Barbara parcels purchased for $10.48 million in 2021 and sold in 2022 to two buyers: Jennifer Aniston, who paid $14.75 million for the main home, and personal trainer Bob Green, who paid $2.3 million for the property with two cottages.
  • Multiple Illinois properties: Winfrey has owned several homes in and around Chicago over the years. Their sales (cumulatively) added about $6.25 million to Winfrey’s coffers, according to Realtor.com.
