With many retirees living well past their 70s, it’s likely that they will need some form of long-term care during their lifetimes. The cost of long-term care varies widely depending on the type of care, as well as where you live.
Memory care, a type of long-term care community catered to the specific needs of individuals with dementia, is the most costly, with a national average cost of $6,200 per month, according to A Place for Mom. The average cost for an assisted living facility is $4,995 per month, and the average cost for an independent living facility for seniors is $3,100 per month. The average national cost for in-home care is $30 per hour.
However, residents of some states will pay significantly more for these long-term care options. Here’s a look at the states with the most expensive long-term care, ranked by the average cost for assisted living.
1. New Jersey
- Average cost for assisted living: $7,000 per month
- Average cost for memory care: $8,498 per month
- Average cost for independent living: $3,600 per month
- Average cost for in-home care: $33 per hour
2. New Hampshire
- Average cost for assisted living: $6,879 per month
- Average cost for memory care: $8,850 per month
- Average cost for independent living: $4,390 per month
- Average cost for in-home care: $33 per hour
3. Massachusetts
- Average cost for assisted living: $6,669 per month
- Average cost for memory care: $8,500 per month
- Average cost for independent living: $3,995 per month

4. Delaware
- Average cost for assisted living: $6,525 per month
