Traveling abroad may seem like a distant dream if you’re dependent on your Social Security, but it’s not. By being smart about when you travel, how you book and where you stay, you can take affordable and fun vacations out of the country without blowing your budget.

Here’s what two travel experts had to say about making your money last longer when traveling abroad.

Travel During the Shoulder Season

Stephanie Rytting, travel expert, renowned travel author and founder of France Adventurer, said that one of the most effective ways to keep costs down is to travel during the shoulder season or off-peak periods.

“By avoiding peak travel times, you can often find significantly discounted rates on flights, accommodations and even attractions,” she explained. “Additionally, popular destinations tend to be less crowded, allowing for a more authentic and immersive experience.”

Choose Your Destination Wisely

Not all international travel plans cost the same, so it makes sense to choose your destination based on forethought. Additionally, be prepared to compromise if your dream destination is too expensive.

“Certain countries, such as those in Central America or Southeast Asia, offer excellent value for money, with affordable accommodations, local transportation and dining options,” Rytting said. “For example, a month-long stay in a charming town in Mexico or Thailand can cost less than a week in a major European city.”

Consider Alternative Lodging Options

If you’re not averse to taking on some extra responsibility while abroad these alternative lodging options could save you considerably.

“Housesitting or home exchange opportunities can also provide substantial savings on accommodation costs,” Rytting said. “By offering to care for someone’s home and pets while they’re away, you can enjoy free lodging in your desired destination. This approach not only saves money but also allows you to live like a local and fully immerse yourself in the culture.”

Consider Alternative Modes of Transportation

Being flexible about travel once you get to your destination can also help you save.

“When it comes to transportation, consider alternative modes that can be more budget-friendly than traditional airfare,” Rytting said. “For instance, traveling by train or bus can be a cost-effective option, especially within Europe or when exploring a specific region. Additionally, taking advantage of discount airlines or exploring repositioning cruises can sometimes yield significant savings.”

Spend Time Researching Budget-Friendly Airfare and Lodging

Laura Mecoy, founder of Mecoy Travels, said she appreciates the value of travel professionals and uses them on occasion, but most of her travel is do-it-yourself.

She researches affordable adventures, air travel and accommodations. “This approach saves substantially on travel costs and gives travelers more freedom to choose what appeals most to them,” she explained.

Her tip is to research extensively, using travel books, travel blogs and various booking sites, (Kayak, Expedia, Google flights, Hotel Tonight, etcetera) and then to book directly with hotels and airlines to ensure easy cancellation and upgrades.

Consider Booking Via a Vacation Rental Site for Longer Stays

When spending four or more days somewhere, Mecoy said she often books a flat or room through Airbnb or other vacation rental sites at rates below hotel rates. In doing so, she has a more comfortable place to stay, can avoid restaurant costs by eating in, do laundry and experience “real life” as much as possible.

Utilize Points for Airline Miles or Lodging When You Can

Mecoy also takes advantage of frequent flier, hotel and credit card programs that exchange points for airline miles and hotel rooms. Discounts offered through AARP, AAA and Costco also help lower costs, she said.

Consider Traveling With Friends

“Traveling with friends also saves money because you can share the costs of rideshares, auto rentals vacation rentals and more,” said Mecoy. “Another big cost-saving is using home exchanges, which can eliminate the cost of housing and, in some instances, vehicle costs.”
