Volvo XC60
- Starting Price: $48,345
This compact SUV delivers exceptional safety, assisted by its standard all-wheel drive. The cabin is also beautiful and decidedly Scandinavian in its clean feel. While not “cheap” at a starting price of $48,345 according to Kelley Blue Book, it lands in the middle pricing range for family SUVs.
Alan Gelfand, mechanic and owner of German Car Depot, raved about the XC60: “The plug-in hybrid option allows families to make daily commutes on electric without giving up long distance drives. And the thoughtful interior design combined with its advanced driver assistance features makes this European SUV one of the best options for families.”
Volkswagen ID.4
- Starting Price: $46,520
Prefer an all-electric SUV? Consider the VW ID.4, which feels roomy despite its classification as a compact SUV.
“The ID.4 boasts strong safety features and plenty of driving range for daily driving,” added Gelfand. “With VW’s continual improvements in software and charging infrastructure, it strikes a balance between affordability and functionality among EVs.”
BMW X5
- Starting Price: $67,475
If you want a mid-size, luxury SUV, the BMW X5 sets the bar to beat. It’s fun to drive, the cabin is comfortable, and the engine is powerful.
With trim prices ranging up to $92,025 however, it’s certainly not cheap. Consider the slightly smaller X3 as an alternative, with its starting price of $51,125. It still packs plenty of cargo space and comfortable seating. “The xDrive all-wheel-drive system adds flexibility in all weather conditions and more off-road ready capability for those who want it,” noted Gelfand.
Mercedes G-Class

When price is no object, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class combines off-road toughness with cutting-edge technology and plush luxury, all in a single striking vehicle.
Melanie Musson, auto industry expert with AutoInsurance.org, had nothing but praise for the G-Class: “With its trendy, tough exterior and excellent reliability, it’s a great vehicle for families. The G-Class handles well in adverse road conditions too, for families who endure snowy winters.”
Audi A3 Sportback
- Starting Price: $39,495
Not every family needs or wants an SUV, of course. If you want a family car that still feels luxurious and fun to drive, the A3 offers it all at a (relatively) reasonable price.
“Audi’s A3 blends practicality, reliability and comfort,” explained Carl Rodriguez of NX Automotive Transport. Part of that practicality includes its standard all-wheel drive, which not only helps in bad weather, but also grips the road better for everyday safety.
On the reliability side, Audi ranked highest among European carmakers in this Consumer Reports‘ 2025 dependability study.
