For many Americans, one of the easiest places to cut the budget when times are tight is eating out. It can be much cheaper to make food at home.

However, if you’re ready to save more money in 2026 while still dining out, here are some simple ways to cut that restaurant bill.

1. Buy and Use Gift Cards

The end and beginning of the year are two great times to purchase restaurant gift cards. You can find deals that give you bonus cards during holiday and new year promotions.

If you buy these gift cards for restaurants where you already plan to eat, you’re basically saving money on your next visit.

2. Join Loyalty Programs

You may be among the first customers to find out about gift card promotions if you’re part of a loyalty program. The restaurant may send you an email or text about the dates for the card deals.

That’s not the only reason to join a loyalty program. Some of these programs offer you free food and coupons throughout the year.

3. Go to Happy Hour

This time is about more than just discounted drinks. You can find some great deals on food too. As noted by Olde Raleigh Financial Group, which listed happy hour as a top way to cut costs when dining out, these specials are usually offered before or after peak dinner hours on weekdays.

4. Check Out the Menu Online

You may think of this like making a list before you go shopping. It can help you spend less because you already know what you want to buy. In fact, per The Penny Hoarder, you can compare menus and choose a place with inexpensive options you enjoy.

If you check out the restaurant menu before dining out, you can see any specials and avoid being tempted by colorful menu pictures and a physical menu layout designed to attract your eye (and stomach) to pricier items.

5. Review Your Bill

I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve looked over my bill and found a mistake. For instance, I ate at a popular restaurant the other day and was overcharged $7.

Just take a minute to review the bill before paying to make sure everything is correct and all discounts are applied.
