What goes into determining the best buys to make, settle for or skip at a discount retailer such as Dollar Tree? At GOBankingRates, we look into several factors, such as how much every item costs (not everything costs $1.25) and what reviews from shoppers have to say about the products.
From lawn decorations to stockings, check out the 10 items shoppers are recommended to splurge on, settle for or skip at Dollar Tree this holiday season.
Skip
Folded Gift Boxes
- Price: $1.25
On the surface, these Christmas House folded gift boxes seem like a great deal. Each set comes with five small boxes in an assortment of festive holiday designs.
However, several one-star reviews on the Dollar Tree website said the boxes may be smaller than what shoppers expect. These assortments measure at 5x5x2 inches; so, depending on your needs, you might skip these in favor of larger gift boxes.
Garland Wreaths
- Price: $1.25
Several Dollar Tree shoppers left two- and one-star reviews explaining why Crafter’s Square garland wreaths weren’t worth the money.
“I purchase a lot of wreaths and wreath forms throughout the year from DT. This is the absolute worst quality ever!” Carpe Diem wrote in a one-star review. “They are made from cheap cellophane paper and have no shape whatsoever. The bow is made out of that extremely thin velvet paper that scuffs easily. The bells were missing from a few of the wreaths. Now I’m stuck with something I can’t use.”
Tinsel Candy Cane Lawn Décor
- Price: $5
It may be easier for Dollar Tree shoppers to skip over this candy cane lawn decoration. Each lawn ornament is $5 each and comes with mixed reviews.
Tracy, a Dollar Tree shopper based out of Tallahassee, Florida, wrote in a one-star review: “I bought these two weeks ago. They are already losing the red color and falling apart.”
Settle For
White Taper Candles
- Price: $1.25
Shoppers who need to buy a set of white taper candles quickly may settle for the pairs sold at Dollar Tree.
While there’s nothing wrong with these candles, they might not be the best deal for the money if you need to buy several at a time. What if you need 12 taper candles to light for various celebrations? It would cost Dollar Tree shoppers $7.50 to purchase 12 candles. By comparison, Target prices a 12-pack of white taper candles for $7 under the Room Essentials brand.
Woodsy Plaid Stockings
- Price: $1.25
Don’t have a lot of money to spend on stockings this year? Buy one of these inexpensive woodsy plaid stockings from Christmas House.
Each stocking measures at 16.5 inches, and they are available in snowflake or tree designs. Add a few to your Dollar Tree shopping cart for family members and furry family members alike.
Artificial Poinsettia with Pot
- Price: $1.25
The Christmas House artificial poinsettia is the perfect middle ground if you want to shop for holiday poinsettia flowers without paying too much money.
Each set of flowers comes in its own pot and measures up to six inches. Check in with your local Dollar Tree store to see whether they’re in stock, or order online to buy in bulk.
Splurge On
Self-Adhesive Gift Tags With Bows
- Price: $1.25
These Christmas House self-adhesive gift tags previously have been cited as one of the best ways to spend $20 at Dollar Tree during the holidays by GOBankingRates.
Each eight-count pack includes a holiday-themed gift tag with a small bow attached to dress up gifts under the tree. Five-star reviews from Dollar Tree shoppers praised how nice these gift tags make packages look and emphasized shopping for more once they’re in stock at local Dollar Tree stores.
Christmas-Themed Beaded Ball-Shaped Garland
- Price: $5
This 6-foot Christmas-themed beaded garland is wildly popular at Dollar Tree — and worth the splurge, according to shoppers. Five-star reviews highlight how well-made the garland is and its overall value for the price.
Christmas Icon Decorative Pillows
- Price: $5
You won’t be able to resist adding one (or more) of these Christmas icon decorative pillows to your Dollar Tree shopping cart. Each is just $5 and comes in several assorted shapes, including trees and peppermints.
“I bought the green Christmas tree with the star on top,” wrote Mony621 in a five-star review. “It is super cute. I went back and bought two more.”
Lindt Lindor Milk Chocolate Truffles
- Price: $1.25
Don’t hesitate to buy Lindt Lindor milk chocolate truffles when you spot a bag for sale at Dollar Tree.
These truffles are incredibly affordable for the name-brand and the perfect size to add to stockings as a stocking stuffer — or treat yourself for a shopping trip where you stayed on budget.
