There are thousands of holiday items for sale on the Walmart website, which makes it nearly impossible to figure out what’s worth spending your money on vs. what you can skip over.
Luckily, GOBankingRates is here to help you narrow down your options to the best buys. We reviewed various holiday gifts and decorations for sale at Walmart and pulled our top 11 recommendations for items you should skip buying, settle for and splurge on this holiday season.
Settle For
Christmas Pathway Lights
- Price: $26.99
If your holiday budget this year is tight and you’re unable to afford more expensive pathway lights, DAYBETTER’s Christmas pathway lights offer shoppers an affordable compromise.
Each set includes 20 warm lights with a length of 25.7 feet to cover plenty of ground outdoors. Walmart shoppers also save $10 off the regular price of $36.99 when they shop for these lights online.
Light-Up Acrylic Tree
- Price: $16.98
The bestselling Holiday Time light-up acrylic tree with cardinals is a less expensive figurine worth looking into if you enjoy setting out indoor holiday decorations.
However, be mindful of reading the reviews that don’t give this figurine four or five stars. Within the three-star reviews on the Walmart website, some shoppers said their trees arrived broken and wished they were made of sturdier materials.
Gold Star LED Christmas Tree Topper
- Price: $12.98
The aesthetic look of the Holiday Time gold star LED Christmas tree topper might not be for everyone. If you don’t mind a star-shaped tree topper with faux holly, pinecones and a ribbon at the center, consider adding it to your Walmart shopping cart.
Keep in mind that three AA batteries are required to operate the topper and are not included with purchase. For shoppers that don’t have any spare AA batteries, this will increase your total spend at checkout.

Artificial Wreath
- Price: $15.88
At first glance, Leaveforme’s Christmas artificial wreath looks like a fantastic holiday deal at Walmart. But take a closer look. The wreath is just one of three holiday decorations for sale. Each item is sold separately, even though one of the pictures seems to indicate shoppers receive all three decorations for the price of one.
In a one-star review, Joanna wrote that they bought the whole set and wouldn’t recommend this purchase to anyone. “It looks nothing like what was advertised. It’s very cheap. The wreath is so tiny. I thought it was going to be big. It’s the size of a dinner plate.”
Christmas LED Lights
- Price: $29.79
As pretty as this bestselling prismatic Christmas tree is, it may not be worth paying nearly $30 on. Several one-star reviews from Walmart shoppers described this tree as “flimsy” and cheaply made.
S’mores Gift Set
- Price: $14.88
Food and drink-themed gift sets, like this Dove Chocolate s’mores gift set, are holiday gifts we know can be assembled together for a lot less money somewhere else. Skip this purchase and head on a dollar store shopping run to DIY your own gift set with a mug and s’mores essentials for $1.25 each.
Multicolored Light-Up Bulb Necklace
- Price: $5
Holiday Time’s multicolored light-up bulb necklace isn’t worth your $5 at Walmart.
Of its total reviews, 50% are currently one-star ratings. Several shoppers cited the lights not working as the biggest issue with the purchase.
Splurge On
Inflatable Snowman With Penguins
- Price: $39.99
If this is the year you’ll add inflatable decorations to your front or backyard, we recommend buying Zimtown’s inflatable snowman with three penguins. This inflatable measures at 6 feet tall and has received glowing reviews from shoppers, many of whom said it’s a great value for the price.
Speaking of price, this snowman inflatable is part of Walmart’s Black Friday Deals. Shoppers save $71 off the original price of $110.99: a splurge with savings!
Snowflake Christmas Tree Skirt
- Price: $9.87
Upgrade your existing Christmas tree skirt with TWSOUL’s snowflake Christmas tree skirt available online at Walmart. This 30-inch tree skirt is just under $10 and features a design of gold and silver stitched snowflakes.
Merry Velvet Decorative Pillow
- Price: $11.94
Available in red and green, Holiday Time’s “merry” velvet decorative pillow is an affordably priced splurge that adds a festive touch to couches, beds and chairs during the holidays.
One Walmart shopper left a five-star review that said this is a cheaper dupe of a similar “merry” pillow sold at Pottery Barn. GOBankingRates found the Pottery Barn pillow (with a down feather insert) at a whopping retail price of $78.
Scented Candles
- Price: $5.98
Candles are the ultimate holiday splurge and Walmart shoppers can put their shopping savvy to work picking up Glade Merry Berry Celebration scented candles.
These bestselling candles come in a package of two for $5.98, which comes out to $2.99 per candle. Fill your space with a sweet scent or give as cheap stocking stuffers this holiday season.
Editor’s note: Prices and availability are accurate as of Nov. 25, 2024 and subject to change.
