Every year, certain gifts seem to win the popularity contest: They appear on almost everyone’s holiday wish list — not to mention the gift guides of major publications. It makes you wonder which of these gifts will keep on giving in the form of increased value over time. Remember the Furby craze? One of those lil’ monsters could fetch thousands of dollars today.

Curious about which of today’s hot gifts might enter a similar echelon of profitability, I turned to my old pal ChatGPT. I asked a direct question: “Which hot and popular gifts of 2025 could be worth thousands of dollars in 10 years?”

The AI gave me some interesting answers that may have me padding my own holiday list.

What Makes a Gift Valuable Over Time

Instead of listing items right away, ChatGPT offered a more nuanced analysis of the factors that might make a gift worthwhile down the line. The AI included a clear caveat: While nothing is guaranteed to appreciate, certain types of gifts this year could be worth thousands of dollars in a decade — particularly if they’re rare, limited-edition and kept in excellent condition.

“What ‘works’ tends to be items that combine desirability, scarcity, cultural or historical importance, craftsmanship or artistry — and ideally provenance that makes them collectible,” ChatGPT said.

Today’s Popular Gifts With Long-Term Upside

Next, ChatGPT unwrapped a few gift ideas that have strong potential to appreciate in value. Based on its insights, you might want to hold onto these items for the next 10 years.

Luxury Timepieces and High-End Watches

ChatGPT said “watches from top-tier makers remain among the most reliable wearable investments.”

The AI listed the Patek Philippe Nautilus 5980/60G Travel Time Chronograph as an example: “A luxury chronograph watch with strong heritage and likely limited production … [it] could well appreciate if kept under proper care.”

The Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional 42mm was also included as “a legendary model with historical significance (moon-landing heritage) — [it] tends to hold value and could become even more desirable among collectors.”

Limited-Edition Sneakers, Streetwear and Fashion Drops

ChatGPT noted, “Rare, hype-driven sneakers often become collector’s items, especially from major brands and collaborations.”

It added that sneakers with cultural significance or limited releases — like the Undefeated x Air Jordan 4 Retro OG, a reissue of a coveted collaboration — have a better chance of accruing long-term value, the AI said.

Collectible and Limited-Run Goods

Citing the rise of nostalgia, ChatGPT said pop culture collectibles such as limited-edition toys, figurines, retro consoles, LEGO sets or even design-toy art pieces could become “collectible art rather than playthings.”

Art, Vintage-Style Craftsmanship and Heritage Items

For more traditional collectibles — fine art, rare books, vintage jewelry and handbags, or limited-release high-quality items — ChatGPT has good news. These can appreciate over decades because of scarcity and cultural or historical value.

“Gifts in this realm often appeal to collectors who value provenance, condition and authenticity — all good traits for long-term value retention,” the AI wrote.

Hybrid ‘Phygital’ or Next-Gen Collectibles

Not familiar with the term “phygital”? Better learn it quickly. ChatGPT said interest is growing in digital or phygital goods — limited-run items tied to digital assets or certificates of authenticity.

“If done well — with verifiable scarcity and demand — these could become the rare artworks or collectibles of tomorrow,” ChatGPT said.

Remember: There Are No Guarantees

ChatGPT cautioned that you shouldn’t expect buying a LEGO set today to put thousands in a child’s college fund down the line.

“Trends fade — what seems hot now might be forgotten,” the AI wrote. “What’s ‘in’ depends on cultural interest, nostalgia and collector behavior decades down the road.”

When an item is overproduced or overhyped, it can saturate the market — all those “collector editions” can reduce scarcity and depress value. Keeping an item in good condition is also essential. A collectible stored carelessly will fetch far less than the same item kept in mint condition.

The AI left me with some final words of wisdom: “Treat these more like long-term collector bets rather than safe investments.”

The Bottom Line

Who knows which of these gifts will be the next Furby — a toy of the moment that accrues long-term value? While there are no guarantees, the items ChatGPT highlighted tend to hold their own when it comes to scarcity, craftsmanship and cultural relevance. If you’re planning to gift (or keep) something with long-term potential, focus on quality and condition, and treat any appreciation as a bonus, not a promise.
