What $1,500 in Rent Gets You in Every State

How far your housing budget goes depends largely on where you live. Some states, like Hawaii, are expensive, while others, such as Arkansas, give you far more bang for your buck. Similarly, the amenities you can expect to find in your apartment vary based on location and what you’re willing to spend.

For this study, GOBankingRates assumed a $1,500 median rent and divided by each state’s median rent per square foot to determine how much square footage $1,500 theoretically gets you in each state. For amenities, the average percentage of residences with dishwashers, washer/dryers and air conditioning were found for the largest rental markets in each state; for the largest states, five cities were used, and for the smallest states, two cities were used.

If you’re looking to save money on an apartment or house for rent, read on to learn what a $1,500 rental budget will get you in each of the 50 states.

Hawaii tops the list of most expensive states to rent in. With a median price per square foot of almost $2 — more than 35 cents per square foot higher than second-place California — you can only expect about 765 square feet to live in. Almost three-fourths of Hawaii apartments have air conditioning, and almost two-thirds have washers and dryers, but less than a quarter have dishwashers.

For example, you could spend $1,500 on an apartment in Waianae, Hawaii, and get 815 square feet. But, for that extra space, you won’t have air conditioning or a dishwasher. You will enjoy on-site laundry, a parking spot and communal swimming pools, a jacuzzi and basketball courts, though.

Inside the continental United States, you won’t find a more expensive state than California for rentals. At $1.59 per square foot, the median apartment won’t even get you 1,000 square feet. California is also stingy on the amenities, with only about a third of apartments boasting dishwashers, washers and dryers and air conditioning.

In Sacramento, Calif., you can find a two-bedroom, 850-square-foot apartment in Portofino on the Lake costing between $1,315 and $1,495. Though the size is small, you do get air conditioning and a dishwasher, along with laundry facilities on site. Plus, you have access to a fitness center, a clubhouse with pool table, a pool and tennis court.

On the other side of the country, Massachusetts has a median price of $1.38, so you can expect a little over 1,000 square feet in the average apartment. A slim majority of apartments have a dishwasher and air conditioning, but less than 30 percent have washers and dryers.

If you want to live anywhere near Boston, however, expect to pay more for less. For example, 22 Gerrish Avenue in Chelsea offers a 443-square-foot studio for between $1,414 and $1,515 per month. But, you will have a dishwasher and air conditioner, plus wood floors, large closets and a clubhouse with fitness center.

Alaska might not be on everyone’s list of dream home states, but it ranks high on the list of most expensive places to rent. A $1,500 apartment will leave you with just under 1,200 square feet of living space. Less than half of apartments have washers and dryers, and less than a third have dishwashers. Virtually none of Alaska’s apartments include air conditioning, but given the climate, you won’t miss it. Another benefit of living in Alaska: It’s one of seven states with no income tax.

For example, in Anchorage, you can rent a two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment with 920 square feet, an in-unit washer and dryer and a dishwasher for between $1,275 and $1,625 at the Terrace on the Lake. Amenities include a wood-burning fireplace, sauna, fitness center and a tennis court.

New Jersey has the fifth-highest median rent per square foot in the country, so $1,500 per month will only get you about 1,200 square feet. Worse, New Jersey apartments are stingy on amenities: About a third of apartments have dishwashers and air conditioning, and only 11 percent have washers and dryers.

If you want amenities, be prepared to sacrifice square footage. In Trenton, N.J., you can live at the Roebling Lofts in a 911-square-foot apartment costing between $1,480 and $1,499. But, you will have a washer and dryer, dishwasher and air conditioning, plus a fitness center on site.

Rhode Island offers the same median rent price as New Jersey, so you can expect about the same square footage in an average apartment. Rhode Island apartments are much more likely to have amenities, however, with over half offering dishwashers and air conditioning and almost a third boasting washers and dryers.

But, if you want to live in or near Providence, rents are higher. For example, at Independence Place in Cranston, R.I., you will pay between $1,455 and $1,480 for an 830-square-foot apartment with one bed and one bath. You will get air conditioning and an oversized tub for your money.

At $1.20 per square foot, the median apartment in Maryland will get you 1,250 square feet to call home. Maryland apartments are also generous with amenities, with almost half including a washer and dryer, over 60 percent including a dishwasher and over 70 percent offering air conditioning.

Outside the DC metro area, Maryland apartments are cheaper. To live at Brandywine & Woodbridge in Hagerstown, Md., you can rent a three-bedroom, two-bath apartment with 2,700 square feet for between $1,350 and $1,626 per month. Plus, you get a dishwasher, washer and dryer, air conditioning, fitness center, playground and pool.

Colorado’s median price per square foot is $1.19, meaning you can expect just over 1,250 square feet of living space. With over half of apartments having washers and dryers, and 60 percent boasting dishwashers and air conditioning, you’re likely to have at least a few amenities in your budget.

In Colorado Springs, you can live in a two-bed, two-bath apartment with 850 square feet that comes with a dishwasher and air conditioning at Boulder Crescent for $1,490. There’s a laundry facility on site, plus a billiards room, fitness center and a seasonal heated pool — and the views are pretty nice, too. It pays to rent in Colorado — it’s actually more expensive to own a home than it is to rent.

Connecticut and New York both have the same median rent per square foot at $1.18, meaning you can expect to live in about 1,270 square feet for $1,500 per month. An extra 13 percent of apartments in Connecticut have dishwashers, an additional 8 percent have washers and dryers and an extra 7 percent have air conditioning, though.

In Naugatuck, Conn., you can rent a two-bedroom apartment with 980 square feet at the Parkview Apartments for $1,350 to $1,510 per month. You’ll have a dishwasher and air conditioning in the unit but must settle for an on-site laundry facility. But, if you have a puppy, you’ll enjoy the fenced-in dog run.

Like Connecticut, New York offers about 1,270 square feet of space in a median apartment. Where you live in the state will have a drastic impact on how far your $1,500 goes, though. Unsurprisingly, you’ll get much more for your money in rural New York than New York City.

Living in Albany is more expensive than the median, but you won’t be paying New York City rates. For example, at the Park South Apartments in Albany, you can rent a 735-square-foot, one-bed, one-bath apartment for $1,460. There is a washer and dryer in each unit, along with a dishwasher and air conditioning.

In Minnesota, you can expect just over 1,270 square feet for $1,500 per month. Between 40 percent and 50 percent of apartments offer dishwashers, washers and dryers and air conditioning. But, given the cold winters, you’ll be more concerned with making sure the heat works.

If you want to live in St. Paul, Minn., which has one of the hottest housing markets in the nation, you can rent at Galtier Towers in a Cass 1 Den apartment with 926 square feet for $1,465 to $1,495 per month. You’ll have a dishwasher and air conditioning, plus an on-site laundry facility. Other amenities include zip car access, tanning, granite countertops and a book and DVD library for residents.

Maine is the first state with a median rental price that translates to more than 1,300 square feet for $1,500 per month. Only 14 percent of apartments in Maine have air conditioning, but you probably won’t miss it. With only 38 percent offering dishwashers and 47 percent offering washers and dryers, though, you might miss those features.

At the Princeton Ridge Apartments in Portland, Maine, you can score a 990-square-foot, two-bed, one-bath apartment for between $1,375 and $1,500. You’ll get a dishwasher but have to settle for an on-site laundry facility. You’ll also have access to a fitness center, and your furry friends are welcome, though breed restrictions apply.

A $1,500 monthly rent gets you two extra square feet in Vermont compared to Maine. Washers and dryers are popular amenities, with two-thirds of apartments featuring them. Dishwashers and air conditioning aren’t nearly as common, with those amenities appearing in only a third of apartments.

In Essex Junction, Vt., you can call the Village at Autumn Pond home for $1,400 to $1,450. Though the 789-square-foot apartment size is on the small side, you can use the community’s fitness center, pool and barbecue grills. The community also connects to walking and biking trails, and apartments feature washer and dryer hookups.

Illinois median rents are skewed by Chicago, where prices are much higher. But, overall, you can expect the median $1,500 apartment to boast 1,337 square feet. Almost half of apartments have dishwashers, washers and dryers, and 60 percent come with air conditioning. If you want to live in Chicago, you’ll need to adjust your expectations. But, you might be able to secure even more space if you’re willing to live in rural areas.

You can live in a four-bed, two-bath apartment at Eco Park in Dekalb, Ill., for just $1,450. The square footage is a little small at 1,100, but you get central air conditioning, a dishwasher and a washer and dryer, plus oversized closets.

Washington’s median price per square foot of $1.12 means $1,500 will typically get you just over 1,340 square feet of living space. Your chances of landing an apartment with amenities are good, with 57 percent having dishwashers and 60 percent including a washer and dryer. But, don’t hold your breath for air conditioning: less than 20 percent of apartments in Washington offer AC.

In Olympia, Wash., you can live at 8Hundred West without breaking the bank. For a monthly rent of $1,400 to $1,480, you get a two-bed, 2.5-bath apartment with 1,173 square feet. There’s also a dishwasher, washer and dryer and covered parking, and you can use the fitness center, clubhouse and business center.

New Hampshire’s $1.11 median price per square foot translates to just over 1,350 square feet for a $1,500 monthly rent. Dishwashers and air conditioning, at 68 percent and 76 percent respectively, are relatively common in New Hampshire, but only a little over a third of apartments have washers and dryers.

In Nashua, N.H., you can rent a townhouse at Clovelly Apartments for $1,400 to $1,450 per month. You’ll be able to spread out in 1,577 square feet and enjoy a dishwasher and air conditioning in your unit, which also has washer and dryer hookups. For fun, curl up by your fireplace or enjoy the community playground.

On the other side of the country, Oregon also has a median price per square foot of $1.11, though the availability of amenities is different. Over 60 percent of units have washers and dryers, and 40 percent have dishwashers. Don’t count on air conditioning though: just 11 percent of apartments come with it.

Living in Portland, Ore., is a little more expensive. For a studio at the Bridgetown Lofts in Portland, you’ll pay between $1,425 and $1,541 per month for around 560 square feet. But, you will have a dishwasher, washer and dryer and air conditioning. Plus, you’ll enjoy covered parking and access to a fitness center and clubhouse.

At median apartment prices, $1,500 a month in North Dakota rents you over 1,360 square feet. Dishwashers and air conditioning are found in over 70 percent of units, and almost 60 percent offer washers and dryers.

If you want to live in Bismarck, N.D., you can rent just over 1,570 square feet in a three-bedroom, one-bath apartment at Coulee Ridge for $1,500 per month. Your apartment includes underground parking, a dishwasher, air conditioning and washers and dryers in some units. You’ll also enjoy a fitness center, dog park and community center.

Florida ranks as the 19th most expensive state to live based on the median price per square foot of $1.06. It’s also the first state to offer more than 1,400 square feet for $1,500 in rent. Amenities, however, are limited. Less than half of apartments have dishwashers and air conditioning, and less than 40 percent offer washers and dryers.

In Tallahassee, Fla., you can rent a three-bed, two-bath apartment at The Evergreens at Mahan for $1,435 per month. Your 1,270-square-foot apartment comes with air conditioning, a dishwasher and a washer and dryer. Plus, you can enjoy a billiard room, media room, fitness center and hot tub on site. Even when you’re renting, it’s good to have insurance — these are your best renters insurance options.

Utah squeezes into the top 20 most expensive states based on a median rent of $1.04 per square foot. More than half of the state’s apartments come with a washer and dryer, and over 60 percent offer dishwashers and air conditioning.

In Provo, Utah, you can live at the Liberty Center Apartments in a two-bed, two-bath space with just over 1,000 square feet. Though a little small, it features a dishwasher, air conditioning and washer and dryer in unit. Plus, you have access to a fitness center, a complimentary hot drink bar and granite countertops for cooking.

South Dakota is the last state on the list with a median price per square foot of over $1. But, that still gets you almost 1,480 square feet. A slim majority of South Dakota apartments come with dishwashers, washers and dryers and air conditioning.

If you want to live in Rapid City, S.D., you can call a three-bed, two-bath apartment at Copper Ridge home for $1,350 to $1,500 per month. You’ll have a dishwasher, washer and dryer and air conditioning in your unit, plus a gas range. The apartment also has access to a fitness center and TV lounge.

Montana’s median price per square foot is just 98 cents, garnering you over 1,530 square feet for $1,500 per month. Washers and dryers are common amenities, present in over two-thirds of apartments in the state. Dishwashers and air conditioning aren’t so prevalent, though.

In Billings, Mont., you can rent a one-bed, one-bath apartment at the Avenue C Apartments for $1,355 to $1,505 per month. Though the space is small at 806 square feet, the amenities are extensive. Besides air conditioning, a dishwasher and a washer and dryer, you’ll have high ceilings, quartz countertops and wood plank floors in your apartment. The complex has a hot yoga studio, heated pool, fitness center and fenced dog park.

At median rent prices, a $1,500 budget gets you almost 1,600 square feet in Virginia. Air conditioning is common in Virginia, with 70 percent of apartments offering it. But washers and dryers are found in just under 50 percent, and dishwashers are only in slightly more than half of apartments.

In Midlothian, Va., you can live at the Enclave at Midlothian Village in a three-bed, two-bath apartment for between $1,459 and $1,515 per month. Units vary in size between 1,189 square feet and 1,220 square feet, but all include air conditioning, a dishwasher and either in-unit or on-site laundry. Plus, you have access to a pool, fitness center and recreation room.

Delaware is the first state on the list to offer more than 1,600 square feet for a $1,500 rent at median prices. It’s a coin toss as to whether your apartment will have a washer and dryer, but 70 percent have dishwashers and over three-fourths come with air conditioning, making it a great place to live on a budget.

At the Reserve at South Ridge in Middletown, Del., you can rent a 1,550-square foot apartment with three beds and two baths for $1,500 to $1,525. You’ll have a dishwasher, air conditioning and laundry in your unit, along with a gas stove and vaulted ceilings. The complex also offers a fitness center and pool with a sun deck.

With a median price of 92 cents per square foot, Nebraska gives you more than 1,620 square feet for your $1,500 budget. Just half of apartments have a washer and dryer, but almost two-thirds offer dishwashers and air conditioning.

If you want to live in the Old Market Lofts in Omaha, Neb., you can rent a two-bed, two-bath apartment with up to 1,256 square feet for between $1,229 and $1,499 per month. Each apartment offers washer-dryer hookups (plus an on-site laundry facility), a dishwasher and air conditioning. Plus, you get covered parking, oversized closets, a fitness center and hot tub.

Living in Wisconsin might get cold in the winter, but you’ll have more space to spread out in. Plus, you’ll have access to amenities — in fact, more than half of apartments offer dishwashers, washers and dryers and air conditioning.

To live at the Landmark at Hatchery Hill in Fitchburg, Wis., outside of Madison, you’ll spend $1,495 per month for a 1,507-square-foot two-bed, two-bath apartment. You’ll have an island kitchen with a dishwasher, air conditioning and a washer and dryer in your unit. The complex also has a pool, fitness center and whirlpool tubs.

Wyoming has the same median price per square foot as Wisconsin, and an almost equal percentage of apartments with dishwashers. More apartments in Wyoming offer washers and dryers, and 20 percent fewer boast air conditioning.

In Cheyenne, Wyo., you can rent a house for $1,450 per month with 1,322 square feet, three bedrooms and 2.5 baths. The house has a fenced yard, unfinished basement and a two-car attached garage, which will make getting to work a little easier during those cold winter months.

Michigan’s median price per square foot of 91 cents means a $1,500 rent budget can get you over 1,650 square feet. Just over half of Michigan apartments offer dishwashers, while almost two-thirds have air conditioning.

In Grand Rapids, Mich., you can stay at Knapp’s Corner Flats in a two-bed, two-bath apartment for $1,470 to $1,480. The units offer 1,153 square feet of living space, a dishwasher, a washer and dryer in every unit and air conditioning, plus granite countertops. You can also enjoy an outdoor swimming pool, jogging trail and a fitness center.

With a median price of just 90 cents per square foot, Pennsylvania offers almost 1,670 square feet for $1,500. Less than half of apartments in the Keystone State have dishwashers and washers and dryers in them, though. Air conditioning is more prevalent, with 56 percent keeping the temperatures down during the summer.

To live at Clinton Lake in Clinton, Pa., you’ll spend between $1,420 and $1,770 on a three-bed, two-bath apartment with 1,620 square feet. The apartment comes with the standard amenities — including a dishwasher, washer and dryer and air conditioning — plus additional perks like balconies and patios, stainless steel appliances, cathedral ceilings, a fitness center, pool and clubhouse.

Over 1,700 square feet can be yours in Iowa, which tops the list of best places to live for the middle class. All three standard amenities hover around 50 percent.

At the Broadmoor at Jordan Creek in West Des Moines, Iowa, between $1,425 and $1,645 will rent you a two-bed, two-bath apartment with 1,169 square feet, a washer and dryer in unit, hardwood floors, a pantry and oversized closets. You also can use the fitness center, pool and grill and picnic areas in the complex.

Texas’s ranking for apartment size doesn’t quite match the actual size of the state, but at a median price of 85 cents per square foot, you can get 1,765 square feet with a $1,500 housing budget. About six in 10 apartments have dishwashers, and slightly fewer have air conditioning. Washers and dryers, however, are much rarer: less than 30 percent of Texas apartments include them.

Cities in Texas are often more expensive than rural areas. Your rent budget won’t go quite as far in Kansas City, Mo., as it would in other parts of the state. For example, at East 9 at Pickwick Plaza Apartments, $1,500 will get you a two-bed, one-bath, 799-square-foot apartment. The amenities include a dishwasher, air conditioning, on-site laundry, covered parking, balconies, a fitness center, pool, hot tub and conference center.

Arizona is the first state with a median rent price that equates to more than 1,800 square feet. Over half the apartments have dishwashers, and 60 percent have air conditioning. If you’re set on having a washer and dryer in your apartment, you might need to be a bit more discerning: only 42 percent offer that amenity.

Like other metro areas, Phoenix, Ariz., charges higher rents than the suburbs. At Monterra in Phoenix, you can live in a 1,100-square-foot apartment for between $1,185 and $1,640 per month. You’ll have a dishwasher, air conditioning and a washer and dryer in your unit, plus a pool, hot tub, recreation room and fitness center in the gated-access community.

Nevada’s 83-cent median price per square foot equates to 1,816 square feet for $1,500. But, that doesn’t mean the apartment will have the amenities you might desire. About six in 10 apartments have air conditioning and dishwashers, but less than 50 percent include washers and dryers.

Living at The View in Reno, Nev., won’t maximize your square footage, as a 1,110-square-foot, two-bed, two-bath apartment will run you between $1,365 and $1,465 per month. But, you’ll make up for it with amenities. Besides a washer and dryer, air conditioning and a dishwasher, your unit includes granite countertops and oversized closets. And the complex offers a java bar, pool, hot tub, fitness center, barbecues and picnic areas.

South Carolina’s 80-cent median price theoretically lets you call 1,880 square feet home. If you want to live in the state, though, you might have to settle for taking your laundry to a facility, as just about three in 10 apartments offer washers and dryers. Over 60 percent of apartments have dishwashers and air conditioning.

A three-bed, two-bath apartment at Riverland Woods in Charleston, S.C., runs $,1462 per month and comes with 1,341 square feet. Your unit includes a dishwasher, washer and dryer connections and air conditioning. Plus, you’ll have hardwood floors and oversized closets and access to the complex’s fitness center, pool, basketball courts and tennis courts.

Kentucky is the first state with a low enough median price to top 1,900 square feet on a $1,500 budget. Almost half the dwellings have dishwashers, and almost 60 percent have air conditioning. But, you’ll have to be more selective if washers and dryers are a must-have on your list: less than 40 percent come with laundry in unit.

For $1,276 to $1,301, the Glenmary Village in Louisville, Ky., offers a three-bed, two-bath apartment with 1,493 square feet. Your unit includes a dishwasher, washer and dryer connections, air conditioning and a covered parking spot. Besides common facilities like a fitness center, pool and business center, the complex also offers a free car wash.

Like Kentucky, Ohio has a median rent price per square foot of 79 cents. You’re more likely to find an apartment with a dishwasher in Ohio (57 percent) and air conditioning (62 percent), but less likely to find one with a washer and dryer (only 30 percent).

Apartments in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio, are more expensive than the median rate. A studio at Encore Urban Living with 689 square feet of space rents for $1,395 a month. With that you get a dishwasher, air conditioning and walk-in closets. Plus, pets are welcome.

Idaho’s median rent price of 77 cents per square foot means you can afford almost 1,950 square feet on a $1,500 budget. In Idaho, air conditioning is the most common amenity at 62 percent, followed closely by dishwashers at 60 percent. Washers and dryers, however, lag behind at just under 50 percent.

At Monterra Townhomes in Boise, Idaho, you can rent a three-bed, 2.5-bath townhouse for between $1,136 and $1,473 a month. Within your 1,313-square-foot unit, you’ll find a dishwasher and air conditioning but only washer and dryer connections. You’ll also have a balcony or patio and fireplace. The community includes a fitness center, pool and spa.

Kansas has the same median price per square foot as Idaho, but the landlords are stingier on amenities. Air conditioning appears in under 60 percent of apartments, and dishwashers are only slightly more likely to be included than not. Washers and dryers are only present in just over a third of the apartments.

In Wichita, Kan., you can live in a three-bed, two-bath apartment at the Quarters at Cambridge for $1,450 per month. Your 1,370-square-foot unit includes not only a dishwasher and air conditioning, but also a full-size washer and dryer. Residents receive free basic cable and access to the complex’s fitness center, pool and ponds.

Overall, Louisiana offers comparable apartment statistics to Kansas, with the same median price per square foot of 77 cents. Six percent fewer Louisiana apartments have dishwashers and 5 percent fewer have air conditioning, but an extra 4 percent offer washers and dryers.

At the Maison Bocage in Baton Rouge, La., you can lease a 1,456-square-foot, three-bed, two-bath apartment for $1,400 per month. The apartment comes with a dishwasher, washer and dryer hookups, air conditioning, a fireplace and large closets. You can also stay in shape using the complex’s fitness center or relax by the pool.

North Carolina’s median rent price of 75 cents per square foot puts it inside the 10 least expensive states in the country. Only 28 percent of North Carolina apartments have washers and dryers, though. Air conditioning, at 59 percent, and dishwashers, at 67 percent, are more common.

A three-bed, two-bath apartment at Hawthorne at the Peak in Asheville, N.C., will cost you between $1,305 and $1,530 per month for 1,228 square feet. But, you’ll have a washer and dryer in your unit, along with a dishwasher, air conditioning, hardwood floors, large closets and a balcony or patio. Plus, the gated-access community includes barbecue and picnic areas, a fitness center, playground, pool and outdoor gas fire pit.

Tennessee’s median rent equates to over 2,000 square feet for a $1,500 budget. But, given the lack of washers and dryers, you might want to sacrifice some square footage for the convenience of being able to do your laundry at home. Your odds of finding an apartment with a dishwasher and air conditioning are better.

At the Cottages on Tazewell Apartment Homes in Knoxville, Tenn., you can rent a three-bed, two-bath unit with 1,317 square feet for $1,369 to $1,499 per month. The apartment includes a dishwasher, washer and dryer and air conditioning, along with large closets and spa-inspired bathrooms. You’ll also be able to make use of the complex’s pool and fitness center.

Indiana’s rental statistics are similar to Tennessee’s, with $1,500 getting you almost 2,050 square feet. Five percent more dwellings in Indiana have A/C, and 3 percent more have washers and dryers. Three percent fewer have dishwashers.

To live at Castle Creek in Indianapolis, Ind., you’ll pay between $1,200 and $1,485 per month for 1,273 square feet, three bedrooms and two baths. But, your unit includes a dishwasher, washer and dryer, air conditioning for the summer and a fireplace for the winter. Plus, you can enjoy vaulted ceilings and hardwood floors. The complex offers a fitness center, clubhouse, bike maintenance center and pool.

Georgia’s median price of 72 cents per square foot is one of the lowest in the country, equating to over 2,000 square feet on a $1,500-per-month rental. But, less than a third of Georgia dwellings offer washers and dryers. Slightly more than half offer air conditioning and three-fifths offer dishwashers.

At Woodsong Village in Athens, Ga., you can rent a four-bed, three-bath unit with 1,600 square feet for between $1,460 and $1,480 per month. Each unit has air conditioning, a dishwasher and a washer and dryer in the unit, plus a sun deck and a large yard. The housing community also has a pool and fitness center.

Though Oklahoma just misses out on making the top five least expensive states to rent in, it is the first to exceed 2,200 square feet for a $1,500 monthly budget. Dishwashers are the most common amenity statewide, while air conditioning is offered in just under 50 percent of units. Washers and dryers are included in less than 40 percent of dwellings.

But, don’t expect as good of a deal in Oklahoma City. Living at the Warwick in Oklahoma City gets you 1,546 square feet in a three-bed, three-bath apartment for between $1,305 and $1,650 per month. Each unit has a dishwasher, washer and dryer and air conditioning, plus a fireplace for cold nights. As a resident, you can also use the pool, fitness center and clubhouse.

New Mexico makes the top five with $1,500 equaling about 2,219 square feet of living space. About three-fifths of units come with dishwashers and air conditioning, but washers and dryers lag behind.

You can rent a four-bed, 2.5-bath apartment at Diamond Mesa in Albuquerque, N.M., for just $1,339. Your 1,415-square-foot unit includes a dishwasher, air conditioning, washer and dryer, garden tub and balcony or patio. Living at Diamond Mesa allows you to use the fitness center, pool, hot tub and playground.

West Virginia’s median price per square foot translates to over 2,230 square feet for a $1,500 rent bill. Dishwashers are the least common among the three core amenities, at only 47 percent.

In Scott Depot, W.Va., you can rent a two-bed, two-bath apartment at Wexford Village at Devonshire for $1,475 per month. The square footage is less than you might expect at 1,160 square feet, but it does include a dishwasher, air conditioning and washer and dryer. You also have a fireplace, vaulted ceilings and a balcony or patio. The clubhouse has a billiards parlor and chef’s kitchen, and you have access to a fitness center, pool, hot tub, tennis courts, basketball courts and outdoor grills.

Mississippi sneaks into the top three least expensive states, barely edging out West Virginia. Just over half of Mississippi apartments have dishwashers and air conditioning, but less than a quarter offer washers and dryers.

At Ashford Place Apartments in Flowood, Miss., which is near Jackson, you can rent a 1,370-square-foot apartment with three beds and two baths for $1,445 per month. You’ll have to settle for an on-site laundry facility, but you will have a dishwasher and air conditioning. The community includes a pool with a gazebo and tanning bed.

Alabama beats out Mississippi by renting at 2 cents less per square foot, but the amenity statistics are similar. An extra 3 percent of Alabama apartments have dishwashers, an extra 1 percent have washers and dryers and the same amount — 55 percent — have air conditioning.

If you want to live in Birmingham, Ala., you can nestle into a roomy 1,732-square-foot, three-bed, two-bath apartment at the Retreat at Mountain Brook for between $1,440 and $1,480 per month. The washer and dryer is included, and you’ll have a dishwasher and air conditioning, plus built-in bookshelves. The community includes multiple clubhouses, pools and tennis courts, plus a fitness center and playground.

Arkansas is currently the least expensive state to rent in. Thanks to a median price of just 63 cents per square foot, your $1,500 budget can get you almost 2,400 square feet of living space. But, dishwashers, washers and dryers and air conditioning all hover right around 50 percent, so if any of those comforts is important to you, expect to sacrifice a little space.

You’ll also sacrifice space if you want to live in a city like Little Rock. For between $1,460 and $1,675 per month, you can rent a three-bed, two-bath apartment with 1,300 square feet at The Park at Riverdale in Little Rock, Ark. You’ll have a dishwasher, air conditioning and a washer and dryer in your unit, plus ceramic tile entries, high ceilings and bay windows. You can also use the on-site fitness center, pool and hot tub.
