According to a recent study conducted by GOBankingRates, Aspen, Colorado, was the most expensive American tourist destination out of 55 possible options. Couples who want to visit Aspen will spend a total of $2,708 on their vacation, which is much higher than the $998 they would have to pay to visit the cheapest location on the list, Clearwater, Florida.

As a retiree, you may be on a limited budget and may not want to break the bank for a vacation. The good news is that the list of the nation’s 55 most expensive destinations includes some budget-friendly choices for retirees.

GOBankingRates consulted with travel experts to find the picks for the top budget-friendly tourist destinations from the research that may appeal to retirees. The responses were based on weather, activities, budget-friendly accommodations and transportation, and more.

Branson, Missouri

  • Ranking on the list of most expensive destinations: 23/55
  • Total cost for vacation: $1,728

Carlos Nasillo, a travel expert and CEO of Riderly, noted that Branson offers live entertainment, old-time music and nearby lakes, such as Table Rock Lake and Taneycomo. He added, “This area has many attractions for retirees, including Silver Dollar City and scenic drives in the Ozarks.”

Without the high coastal prices, retirees can enjoy reasonable dining and larger portions at affordable prices when visiting Branson.

Clearwater, Florida

  • Ranking on the list of most expensive destinations: 55/55
  • Total cost for vacation: $998

“Clearwater combines gentle Gulf waters ideal for swimming without challenging surf, excellent walkability along beach promenades enabling car-free exploration, and abundant healthcare facilities providing peace of mind for retirees managing health conditions requiring reliable medical access during extended stays,” remarked Nasillo.

As the least expensive option on the list, Clearwater is an exceptional destination for retirees looking for affordable accommodations.

Denver, Colorado

  • Ranking on the list of most expensive destinations: 43/55
  • Total cost for vacation: $1,526

“With 300 days of sunshine, fresh mountain air and easy access to the Rocky Mountains, Denver is ideal for outdoor adventures like hiking, golfing or simply soaking in panoramic views,” remarked Lizzie Raudenbush, the area general manager of The Curtis Hotel. “The city’s walkable neighborhoods, vibrant arts and dining scene and laid-back yet active lifestyle make it easy to relax or explore at your own pace.”

With Denver’s excellent healthcare and welcoming atmosphere, retirees can enjoy their time in the city while exploring a range of attractions, from craft breweries to museums.

Honolulu, Hawaii

  • Ranking on the list of most expensive destinations: 20/55
  • Total cost for vacation: $1,770

“Traveling during shoulder seasons (April to June or September to November) is an excellent opportunity to save on flying and hotel expenses,” shared Christof Bartel, a travel expert and the founder of Urlaubspunt. “There are many local guesthouses and smaller vacation rentals that are much cheaper than a beachfront resort, and they offer a much more genuine island experience.”

While Honolulu can be expensive at times, there are many inexpensive activities that retirees can enjoy, such as Waikiki Beach access, the more challenging Diamond Head walk or hike, the botanical gardens, and open-air cultural events and festivals. With warm weather, retirees can socialize and take in the beautiful climate.

Kissimmee, Florida

  • Ranking on the list of most expensive destinations: 54/55
  • Total cost for vacation: $1,240

A key benefit of Kissimmee is its robust transportation network, which features affordable car rentals and ridesharing services, providing access to inexpensive hotels and budget-friendly entertainment options. As a retiree, one can spend their time on the beach during an extended vacation and find cheap activities to pass the time.

Nasillo noted that Orlando-Kissimmee has good value to offer retirees beyond theme parks. There are golf communities and nature preserves, such as Wekiwa Springs, where retirees can spend their time.

Moab, Utah

  • Ranking on the list of most expensive destinations: 21/55
  • Total cost for vacation: $1,757

Ali Hartford, marketing director with the Moab Office of Tourism, pointed out that most of what makes Moab special is outdoors and low cost. She added, “Moab has a reputation for being an adventure town best seen in the shoulder seasons, but retirees have a unique advantage — they can travel when crowds thin out a bit and rates drop.”

She emphasized that retirees who can travel during the late fall or early spring can find far more budget-friendly hotel, RV park and even vacation rental options than during the peak season. Hartford pointed out that with Arches and Canyonlands nearby, most of the marquee experiences are either covered by a national park pass or cost very little.

Naples, Florida

  • Ranking on the list of most expensive destinations: 36/55
  • Total cost for vacation: $1,590

Nasillo emphasized that the three Florida destinations all offer warm winter weather, which enables outdoor activities. If you combine this with senior discounts at most attractions and restaurants, it’s the ideal state for retirees seeking social connection opportunities.

He added that Naples offers sophisticated cultural amenities, including art galleries, performing arts centers, and upscale dining that appeal to affluent retirees seeking refinement. He also shared that the championship golf courses and pristine beaches provide active lifestyle options for seniors without the hefty price tags.
