When asking ChatGPT how early to file taxes, one might expect a generic answer like “as soon as possible.”

Instead, the answer feels more practical and depends on what your circumstances may be. Basically, your timeline for filing taxes can change depending on whether you’re getting a refund and how complex or simple your finances are.

Here’s the specific advice ChatGPT recommended about filing your taxes.

Earlier Is Usually Better If You’re Getting a Refund

If you expect to get a refund, filing earlier can speed up when you get yours. According to the IRS, most tax refunds are issued within 21 days for those who e-file and choose to receive the money by direct deposit.

Filing early may also help to lower your risk of tax-related identity theft. If you submit yours earlier and someone else tries to file one using your Social Security number, theirs may be more likely to get flagged.

Timing Matters If Your Finances Are More Complicated

ChatGPT flagged that you shouldn’t rush if you don’t have all your documents ready. You don’t want to file, find out you’ve made a mistake on it and then take the time (and potentially extra costs) to file an amended return.

For example, if you are self-employed, invest in brokerage accounts or receive partnership income, you’ll typically have multiple 1099 forms or K-1s. Some of these forms may have errors, and you’ll need to wait for them to be corrected, maybe even weeks later.

If you do end up making errors or filing an amended return, it could get flagged for a manual review, which can significantly delay processing.

Don’t Delay Filing

One area where ChatGPT was clear was that you shouldn’t miss the tax filing deadline.

The IRS charges a penalty for failing to file your taxes. If you’re unsure you’ll be able to file on time, consider filing for an extension.
