Living in New York usually means that you will be paying a high cost of living, though the amount depends on whether you end up in a small upstate village or deep in the heart of The Big Apple. For a lot of people, earning six figures would be enough to sustain them and pay their bills, but in New York, it doesn’t go nearly as far, especially when tax time rolls around.

“A salary of $100k just isn’t what it used to be, especially if you live in a high-tax state like New York,” said Bill Harris, CEO and founder of Evergreen Wealth. “Once you run the numbers, you’re looking at taking home just around 70% of your gross income or that’s before you factor in rent, groceries and transportation.”

We broke down the math to find out just exactly what a $100K salary looks like after taxes in New York.

Conclusion

You might be thinking that all you need to do in order to afford life in New York and pay your taxes is to just earn more income or focus on high-yield savings. Not so.

“As your earnings rise, so do your taxes,” Harris said. “The jump in taxes owed between a $100k and a $250k salary should make you sit up and pay attention. What most people may not realize is how much of a difference it makes to your total tax cost based on the state you reside in.”

As Kiplinger‘s bronze-medal winner for millionaires per capita in America, New York state in particular should educate its residents. As it turns out, New York might be one of the most expensive states when it comes to cost of living and taxes.

Methodology: For this study, We analyzed U.S. States to find the take home pay from an annual income of $100,000. Using IRS.gov for the FICA tax rates and TaxFoundation for state and federal income tax rates, the total taxes paid can be calculated. After finding the total taxes paid, the take home pay can be calculated for each state. All data was collected on and is up to date as of February 17th, 2025.
