Millions of households in Texas receive food stamps each month, which means they are eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. If you live in Texas and receive benefits, keeping tabs on any changes coming is always a good idea. As of the start of 2025, new requirements and restrictions for your SNAP application are coming into play, including new maximum monthly income amounts.

SNAP is federally funded and helps low-income or below-poverty-level families buy good, nutritious foods for their families from local grocers. After rent, utilities, credit card bills, transportation costs and child care, your monthly budget often lacks enough to pick up something nutritious at the farmers’ market. Applying for SNAP can offer you and your family the budgetary wiggle room to eat properly.

SNAP is available to families, the elderly, and single adults as well. Determining eligibility can vary by state, but Texas has pretty standard requirements. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) establishes all eligibility and certification policies overall, and your income eligibility for SNAP food benefits will depend on your situation concerning the following criteria:

  • Residence
  • Citizenship
  • Employment services
  • Work requirement (for individuals age 18-50)
  • Resources
  • Income
  • Social Security numbers

SNAP Benefits in Texas: Quick Take on Requirements

In order to be eligible for the SNAP program you must be a resident of the state of Texas and meet one of the following requirements, according to Texas Health and Human Services:

  • You live in a low-income household. A good measure of this is if you have a current combined checking and savings bank account balance under $2,001.
  • If you have a current bank balance under $3,001 and share your household with either a person age 60 and over or a person with a disability such as a child, your spouse, a parent or yourself.
  • If you are an adult between the ages of 18 to 52 with no children in your home, you can typically get SNAP for three months in a three-year period.
