A quarter is one of those coins that still gets respect in America. That’s mainly because of its face value (25 cents) but also because it has a more commanding physical presence than the much smaller dimes, nickels and pennies that are probably gathering dust in one of your drawers right now.

You can still use quarters to buy stuff, too — just make sure you don’t spend a quarter that could be worth thousands of dollars.

The most valuable U.S. quarters can be sold on the collectibles market for the price of a small estate. A 1796 quarter, for example, sold at auction for $1.74 million in 2022. High-value quarters don’t have to be vintage specimens from the 19th century, however. Several currently in circulation were minted within the last 100 years, according to the CoinValue Checker website. From a generational standpoint, some are young enough to qualify as “millennials.”

As CoinValue Checker noted, every quarter minted since 1932 features George Washington on the “heads” side. But the tails side has changed several times. Even the Washington portrait had three different versions.

Here are some of the most valuable modern American quarters currently in circulation, according to CoinValue Checker. Keep in mind that the sale prices listed below are for coins in top condition. Those not in pristine condition are likely to be much less valuable.
