Florida has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. Each year, millions of people flock to the Sunshine State for pristine beaches and near-perfect weather. But, some trendy locations within the coastal region can break the bank for unsuspecting visitors. A Miami hotel, for instance, could cost you $260 or more per night. Luckily, not all parts of the peninsula are quite so pricey. 

We asked travel experts to give us ideas on where you could visit Florida on a budget. From lesser-known gems located within miles of popular destinations to uncrowded beaches that are nothing short of paradise, here are the cost-effective areas that our experts recommend you visit. 

• Average 3-star hotel price: $140 per night

Maria DiCicco, a travel writer and founder of Always Pack Tissues, explained, “If you’re headed to Daytona Beach and find the hotel prices high, consider Port Orange, just a few minutes up the road. It’s a lesser known gem of yesteryear, full of retirees and snowbirds versus kid-filled condos, so you’re sure to find quieter beach days, early bird specials and plenty of opportunities for visiting east coast sights.”

• Average 3-star hotel price: $165 per night

“If your plans are taking you to Miami Beach, consider just up the road at Hollywood Beach,” DiCicco said. “Still full of high-end hotels, you’ll also find more affordable places just in from the beach. With a more laid-back locals vibe, [[you’ll] find dozens of fun beachfront restaurants at the boardwalk or head inland for authentic and affordable Hispanic eats.”

• Average 3-star hotel price: $175 per night

“If crystal clear waters at Siesta Key are calling your name, look to lesser known Venice Beach, not too far south,” DiCicco said. “With the same sandy shores, Venice offers up a lovely strip of Italian restaurants and boutiques in their main street, and relaxing coastal stays that won’t break the bank.”

Ian Centrone, a tourism program manager with the Martin County Office of Tourism & Marketing, offered, “Stuart, an under-the-radar slice of paradise, is the perfect place for people looking for uncrowded beaches, warm weather, countless aquatic adventures and charming downtown districts — all at a price that won’t break the bank.

“Stuart is located just 45 minutes north of Palm Beach. Stuart is also known as the ‘Sailfish Capital of the World’ because of the many sailfish found off the coast, and the symbol can be found all throughout town — from fountain sculptures and murals to official road signage,” he said.

“Stuart Beach is the perfect place to stay in the summer state of mind all year long,” the travel expert explained. “Plus, it’s located right across the street from world-class attractions like the Elliott Museum and the Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center — two beloved Treasure Coast staples!”

Kelsea O’Donnell, co-owner and chief travel planner of Out of Office Mindset, said, “Melbourne is a hidden gem on Florida’s Space Coast, perfect for budget-savvy travelers. It’s a bit off the beaten path, so you can snag great deals on accommodations, from beachside condos to cozy hotels.”

She added, “Additionally, the Melbourne Orlando International Airport (MLB) frequently has flight deals, making it easy and cheap to get to. Plus, being just 70 miles from Orlando, you can easily access big attractions without breaking the bank.

“There are many free activities like beach days, strolling through historic downtown, and exploring parks and nature trails. Melbourne also has fantastic dining options, from fresh seafood to local farmers’ markets, all fitting various budgets,” the travel planner added.
