Most new car owners hold on to their cars for eight years, but some drivers will keep their cars for twice that long. The brand of car can have a lot to do with it, with some brands having a higher rate of longtime car owners than others.
An iSeeCars.com study analyzed over 929,000 cars from model years 1981 to 2009 to determine which older cars are most likely to be kept by their original owners. According to the study, owners are most likely to hold on to cars from these automakers for 15 years or more.
Toyota
- Percent of cars at least 15 years old that are kept by original owner: 5.6%
- How that compares to the average: 1.5x
Honda
- Percent of cars at least 15 years old that are kept by original owner: 5.3%
- How that compares to the average: 1.4x
Lexus
- Percent of cars at least 15 years old that are kept by original owner: 4.4%
- How that compares to the average: 1.2x
Mazda
- Percent of cars at least 15 years old that are kept by original owner: 4.3%
- How that compares to the average: 1.1x
Hyundai
- Percent of cars at least 15 years old that are kept by original owner: 4.2%
- How that compares to the average: 1.1x
Subaru
- Percent of cars at least 15 years old that are kept by original owner: 4.1%
