Apple has reached a settlement in a class action lawsuit that claimed the company violated customers’ privacy using its voice-activated assistant Siri. According to Reuters, the tech giant has agreed to pay a large amount of money — $95 million — to settle the lawsuit.
In the lawsuit, Apple customers claimed the company regularly recorded their confidential conversations after mistakenly activating Siri and shared them with third parties, including advertisers.
Specifically, two plaintiffs allege mentions of Air Jordan sneakers and the Olive Garden prompted ads for these companies. Another plaintiff claimed he received ads for a brand name surgical treatment after what he believed was a private conversation with his doctor.
Despite agreeing to a preliminary settlement, Apple has denied any wrongdoing in a statement released on the company’s website.
Who Qualifies for the Settlement?
Anyone familiar with the phrase “Hey Siri,” might be owed compensation. This issue started when Apple introduced this feature, which allegedly resulted in the recording of private conversations.
Specifically, if you owned a Siri-enabled iPhone or other Apple device from Sept. 17, 2014 through Dec. 31, 2024, you may be eligible to file a claim.
How To File a Claim
If you believe you’re eligible for compensation under this lawsuit, you’ll need to fill out an online claim form. It isn’t available yet, so keep checking online for it.
When it’s ready, you’ll need to confirm under oath that you purchased or owned a Siri device — and enabled Siri on the device — in the U.S. or its territories. You’ll also need to claim under oath that you experienced at least one Siri unintended activation during a private conversation.
The settlement is waiting for approval by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White. According to AP News, lawyers have proposed a Feb. 14 court hearing to review the terms of the settlement.
Potential Payout Amounts
The more Siri-enabled devices you have, the more money you could receive. Class members may collect up to $20 per Siri-enabled device — with a maximum of five devices.
However, the number of people who file claims could potentially change. An estimated tens of millions of consumers are eligible to file claims, but only 3% to 5% of this group are expected to do so, according to the AP.
The $20 estimate could be increased or reduced, depending on the number of eligible customers who file claims.
