The notorious Mark Cuban is one of America’s most successful business people of the modern day. He surely knows a thing or two about how to become wealthy, and his net worth proves that. The billionaire entrepreneur and Shark Tank star has a real-time net worth of $5.7 billion according to Forbes.

As a billionaire, he’s recently made some strategic financial decisions: selling his stake in the Dallas Mavericks. Here’s why he sold his stake and what his current investments look like in 2025.

Mark Cuban Sold His Majority Stake in the Dallas Mavericks

Cuban used to own 100% of the Dallas Mavericks basketball team. However, according to the Associated Press and Front Office Sports, Cuban sold 72.3% of the team to the Adelson and Dumont families, who run Las Vegas Sands Corp. The sale was valued at $3.5 billion in December 2023. However, Cuban still retains 27.7% of the team today.

Here’s why he made the decision to sell almost three-quarters of the team:

“When I first bought it in 2000 I was the tech guy in the NBA,” Cuban explained on an episode of the All-In podcast. “I was the media guy … I had every edge and every angle. Now fast-forward 24 years later, in order to sustain growth to be able to compete with the new collective bargaining agreement, you have to have other sources of revenue.”

Now that Cuban has largely bowed out of his investment in the Dallas Mavericks, here are the kinds of investments he’s focused on today.

Mark Cuban’s Financial Holdings In 2025

Here are two of Cuban’s biggest financial holdings:

Cash

Cuban always keeps a significant portion of his financial portfolio in cash. Whether it’s due to global affairs, political turmoil or the like, he’s not a proponent of losing money and tends to be risk averse.

Maintaining some sort of cash reserves is important to be prepared for a financial emergency and keep yourself out of debt. However, holding too much cash may actually not be the best idea since your money may have more growth potential if invested in the stock market rather than sitting in a bank account.

Cryptocurrency

At the same time, while Cuban may err on the side of caution, he’s also a fan of disruption. One of the biggest financial disruptors of our time is cryptocurrency. Cuban has invested heavily in crypto and blockchain technologies over the past several years.

In fact, according to the Dallas Mavericks official website, Cuban had decided to start accepting DOGE as a form of payment for Dallas Mavericks merchandise and tickets back in 2021.

However, it’s important to note that while cryptocurrency is still a rather new and evolving financial frontier, it can be quite risky to invest too much of your money in crypto due to its highly volatile nature.

Net worth accurate as of as of March 10, 2025.
