The Expert’s Top Two Choices
Given all these factors, Pyle narrowed his recommendations to two SUVs: the Kia Telluride and Ford Explorer.
Both vehicles appear on the safety list and comfort list, meaning they don’t sacrifice one category for the other. Both start under $45,000 for base models, keeping them accessible to middle-class budgets rather than requiring luxury-tier spending.
Fuel economy for both ranges from 20 to 25 MPG, which represents reasonable efficiency for three-row SUVs. That’s not Prius territory, but it’s far better than older body-on-frame SUVs returning 15 MPG or less.
Both can tow small trailers or boats, adding versatility for families wanting recreational options during trips. Towing capacity matters less if you never tow anything, but having the option means not limiting vacation possibilities based on vehicle constraints.
