Sometimes the hardest decisions are the ones that make the most sense. After four years of owning a BMW 330i M Sport, YouTuber Archie decided to sell it, even though he loved the car and took good care of it.
Archie initially purchased the car for $81,000 AUD in late 2021 with just 4,000 kilometers. Four years later, with 63,000 kilometers, he sold it for $39,000 AUD. Here’s why he sold the car and his plans.
His Income Dropped
The biggest reason he sold the 330i M Sport was a sharp drop in income.
“My business has changed. My salary’s gone from about $120,000 a year down to about $45,000. So I’ve got to cut expenses,” he said.
That’s a 62% drop in income. This kind of major financial change forces you to completely reassess your expenses and cut costs as much as you can. And that’s exactly what Archie did.
Maintenance Costs Were About To Spike
Archie also had upcoming car maintenance costs that would have consumed a significant portion of his reduced income. The vehicle needed several major services, including brake and rotors, battery, transmission, and tires. None of these add resale value but are all essential for continued reliability.
“We are looking at not much change out of $9,000 Aussie dollars,” he calculated. “These things don’t add value to the car because they need to be done. But I’m no longer making $120,000 a year. I’m now making way, way less.”
Lifestyle Change
Another reason Archie sold his BMW is that his priorities have changed. He’s no longer driving as much as he used to and wants to travel more.
“I’d love to travel more. I want to just go away for three months. Go to Vietnam, China, and Malaysia. Low-cost countries,” he said.
The money that could go toward car maintenance can now fund his adventures, something he finds very cool and fun to do. Archie doesn’t have plans to buy another car, as his priorities have shifted.
