The retail industry was already struggling prior to the coronavirus pandemic, but temporary closures, capacity limits at stores and an overall decrease in consumer spending have put even more of a strain on retailers across the country. Many famous chains have declared bankruptcy and/or closed store locations, with some ditching their brick-and-mortar businesses altogether.

Here’s a look at a few companies you love that are now only selling their wares online.
American Apparel
American Apparel has faced its share of issues. Its founder Dov Charney was accused of sexual misconduct, its racy advertisements came under fire and in conjunction with the controversy — or perhaps because of it — sales slumped. The company filed for bankruptcy — twice — and in 2017 it shuttered all of its stores, Glossy reported. In 2018, plans were made to open a single American Apparel location in Los Angeles, but those plans were later scrapped; the retailer remains an online-only store.
Find Out:
Bebe
After piling on debt for years, women’s retailer Bebe closed all of its brick-and-mortar retail locations and relaunched as an online store in 2017, Digital Commerce 360 reported.
Check Out:
Dressbarn
Dressbarn opened in 1962 and filed for bankruptcy in 2019. After closing all of its stores, the women’s retailer reinvented itself as an online-only store in 2020, Glossy reported.

Godiva
In January, Godiva announced that it would be closing all 128 of its locations in North America by the end of March, USA Today reported. The chocolates will still be available to purchase online and at other retailers.
You may be able to shop in-store if you travel abroad, however. The brand said that it will maintain retail operations across Europe, the Middle East and China.
Find Out:
Gymboree
Gymboree closed all 800 of its locations after filing for bankruptcy in January 2019, CNBC reported. The children’s retailer was purchased by The Children’s Place, and in October 2019, the company announced that it was relaunching Gymboree online — and, technically, in stores too. Although there are no longer stand-alone Gymboree stores, you can shop the brand at shop-in-shop locations at select The Children’s Place stores in the U.S. and Canada.

Pier 1 Imports
After closing all of its brick-and-mortar stores, Pier 1 Imports relaunched as an online-only retailer in October 2020.
