If you were a T-Mobile customer in 2021, you might be eligible for a major payout — up to $25,000 — thanks to a class action settlement that resulted after a massive data breach affected approximately 76 million U.S. residents.
In August 2021, T-Mobile suffered a significant cybersecurity breach that exposed customer data, including names, dates of birth, phone numbers and other sensitive information. Now, years later, the company has agreed to a $350 million settlement, with payments starting to go out as early as April 2025. How can you find out if you qualify?
Who’s Eligible for the Settlement?
You can count yourself as part of the “settlement class” if you were among the 76 million U.S. residents whose information was compromised in the breach. If you received a formal notice from T-Mobile about the settlement, you are almost certainly included. However, even if you didn’t get a notice, you may still qualify.
To check your status, visit the official T-Mobile settlement website or call the settlement administrator at 833-512-2314.
How Much Are You Eligible For?
While the settlement states that individuals are eligible for “up to $25,000 in compensation for out-of-pocket losses,” be prepared to back that up with hard evidence.
You may be eligible for that much money in reimbursement if you spent it dealing with identity theft or fraud that you can show is traceable to the T-Mobile data breach. This includes costs like:
- Credit monitoring or identity theft protection purchased after Aug. 1, 2021
- Fees paid to freeze or unfreeze your credit
- Costs tied to identity theft, such as unauthorized charges, falsified tax returns or legal fees
- Professional services to resolve fraud issues
- Miscellaneous costs such as notary services, postage, faxing or long-distance calls related to fraud resolution
To get reimbursed, you have to submit reasonable documentation including receipts, credit card or bank statements or invoices that support your claim. Personal statements alone won’t count but can supplement your documentation.
The settlement administrator will determine whether your claim is valid. Only approved claims will be paid.
Alternative Cash Payments
If you didn’t rack up any out-of-pocket losses, you may still be eligible for an alternative cash payment (amount TBD), depending on how many valid claims are submitted and what funds remain in the settlement pool.
Free Identity Defense and Restoration Services
All settlement class members — regardless of whether they file a claim — will receive free access to identity defense services and restoration services to help monitor and protect their personal data.
You’re Giving Up Legal Rights If You Participate
Be aware that by submitting a claim, you release your right to pursue separate legal claims against T-Mobile related to this data breach. That means if you’ve suffered harm related to the breach but don’t take action now, you no longer have the right to seek additional compensation in the future (with one exception for SIM-swap related claims, not part of this settlement).
How To File a Claim
To submit a claim for reimbursement or cash payment, visit the official settlement site at T-MobileSettlement.com and follow the instructions. You’ll need to provide:
- Documentation of your eligible expenses (if applicable)
- Personal information to verify your identity
- Details of your losses, along with supporting paperwork
