6 Best States for Tech Workers Looking for Jobs

There are an estimated 9.9 million Americans with careers in tech, but that doesn’t mean there are jobs for each one of them. With more than 100,000 tech employees laid off this year so far, many tech workers are looking for their next job — after all, everyone needs to make money.

While some areas of the country offer lots to choose from for those working in tech, other states might have close to nothing.

Where should you move if you need a tech job? The team at One Click Marketing looked at current LinkedIn tech job openings to identify which states are hiring the most workers. Here is a look at the best states to go if you need to land a job in tech. 

If you aren’t living in Virginia and need a job in tech, it’s time to move. Of every job opening Virginia has, 14% of them are in tech, which is higher than anywhere else in the country.

The state has a lot of government and defense tech projects that need to be completed, so it’s a great place to go for someone in tech to advance their career.

Looking to stay on the West Coast while working in technology? Try Washington. It’s home to Microsoft and Amazon, which means you could be working for one of the biggest names in the tech business.

Of 144,702 recent job postings, 17,885 are tech-related, or about 12%. Though it doesn’t take the top spot, this is still high in comparison with the rest of the country, so you’d have a good shot at finding a tech job that fits your interests.

East Coast preference? New Jersey has you covered. Out of a total of 145,212 job openings, 17,466 were in tech, which is also around 12%.

Aside from being close to New York, the area is experiencing an increase in life sciences and fintech industries, which need a lot of tech workers to keep them alive. The state also places a premium on tech education and research institutions, so it’s a great place to get your tech career started. 

Jersey’s famous neighbor isn’t a bad spot to go for tech workers, either.

Of 293,623 open jobs, 32,904 are tech-related, working out to just over 11% total. This is thanks to New York being a center for fintech, cybersecurity and media technologies.

Looking at Maryland job openings, about 11% of them will be catered to those working in some facet of technology. Out of 123,790 job postings, 13,673 are in tech.

Like New York, Maryland also has quite a few jobs in cybersecurity. And because it’s close to Washington, D.C., there is a great need for developing defense technology.

You might only think of the gambling industry in Nevada, but technology is making its mark in the Silver State. Of 42,518 job postings, 4,600 were tech workers, working out to 10.8%.

The state has a lot of data centers and has new initiatives for renewable energy and autonomous technologies, so they need tech workers to fill out those industries.
