Waterfront retirement might feel out of reach for retirees on a budget, but there are still places where ocean views or riverside living are affordable.  

According to AARP, nearly two-thirds of adults rely substantially on Social Security in retirement. For many, that income, which the SSA estimates at $2,071 on average, might be supplemented with small pension, savings withdrawals, rental income or part-time work.

With that combined, $2,500 a month can go a long way in the right waterfront areas, including the eight locations below.

Gulfport, MS

Sitting on the Mississippi Sound, Gulfport’s climate and white sandy beaches make it an attractive option for retirees looking to live by the water. Housing and living costs are manageable here and it’s also less crowded that many of the other popular coastal retirement spots.

Mobile, AL

Mobile Bay and its network of rivers, creeks and marinas mean there are plenty of options for waterfront living and there are Gulf beaches within driving distance.

Duluth, MN

• Cost of living: $836
• Average monthly rent: $1,600

Located on Lake Superior, Duluth offers waterfront views and a strong sense of community. Winters may be on the colder side, but for retirees who enjoy four seasons and outdoor living, it offers strong value.

Cape Girardeau, MO

• Cost of living: $746
• Average monthly rent: $1,013

Cape Girardeau offers small-city living by the Mississippi River, with riverfront views, parks and walking paths. The surrounding area also includes lakeside communities within a short drive, giving retirees options beyond the river itself. Housing and living costs remain among the lowest on this list, with solid access to healthcare and amenities.

Pensacola is a hit with beach lovers looking to retire somewhere by the water. For somewhere that’s so postcard-worthy, it may come as a surprise that it’s still so affordable. Of course, Florida’s tax-friendly environment definitely helps it come under budget.

• Average monthly rent: $1,600

Corpus Christi offers a mix of bayfront living and Gulf Coast beaches, working well for retirees who want to retire by the water without necessarily paying resort-town prices.

Eureka, CA

• Cost of living: $835
• Average monthly rent: $1,450

Eureka sits along the Northern California coast surrounded by redwoods and ocean views. It’s a rare coastal California town where a $2,500 monthly budget is possible.

Erie, PA

• Cost of living: $776
• Average monthly rent: $1,091

Erie sits along Lake Erie and is a popular retirement spot in the Northeast, offering affordable living and plenty in the way of community and recreation. Retirees looking for a comfortable place to experience all for seasons will settle in easily.
