Finding a reliable vehicle can be difficult. After all, technology seems to be changing with each model rolled out. It’s not realistic to be purchasing a new car every few years.
In this article, we’ll cover five American car brands named the most reliable of 2025, helping you make an informed decision on your next purchase.Â
Buick
In J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, Buick was the top-ranked American-made car brand with 143 problems per 100 vehicles. Buick makes a variety of vehicles, from compact cars to large SUVs, giving you options. Buick also has affordable maintenance costs, with an average of $9,018 for maintenance and repair costs in the first ten years of service.Â
“Buick has become one of America’s most reliable brands,” said Melanie Musson, auto industry expert with AutoInsurance.org. “When a Buick does have problems, the repairs are relatively straightforward, and the parts are more affordable than comparable foreign-made parts.”
Cadillac
Cadillac is next up on J.D. Power’s dependability list, with 169 problems per 100 vehicles. Cadillac is known for its luxury features and American heritage. Maintenance costs over the first ten years are also reasonable at $9,819 for the CT5 and $14,667 for the Escalade. Whether you’re looking for a luxury SUV or a brand with strong American roots, you can’t go wrong with Cadillac.Â
Chevy
Chevrolet is tied with Cadillac on J.D. Power’s dependability list, with 169 problems per 100 vehicles. Compared to Cadillac, maintenance costs tend to be lower, at an average of $9,662 over the course of ten years.
One of the top advantages of purchasing a Chevy vehicle is its constant innovation. Chevy continues to refine its vehicles, which is demonstrated through the recent changes to the Traverse.Â
“Chevrolet manufactures a wide range of cars, SUVs, and trucks,” said Musson. “Some are more reliable than others, but generally speaking, Chevrolet vehicles are better than average in terms of reliability. They typically achieve higher mileage without major issues compared to their competitors.”
GMC
GMC also makes the list of reliable American car brands with 181 problems per 100 vehicles, according to J.D. Power’s study. GMC is known for its high-performance trucks and SUVs, especially its Sierra and Yukon models.
GMC vehicles average $9,467 for maintenance and repair costs in the first ten years, keeping the ownership price affordable. If you’re looking for a car or truck with a high towing capacity, the latest technology and a reliable track record, check out GMC vehicles.Â
Ford
The J.D. Power dependability list shows that the average vehicle has 202 problems per 100 vehicles. Ford sits just below this average at 208 problems per 100 vehicles. However, Ford still beats out other American brands, such as Jeep and Chrysler, in dependability.
Ford has always been a pioneer in the automotive industry, known for its moving assembly line and affordability. Ford maintenance is slightly higher than other American car brands at $10,392 over ten years. This average is still reasonable and can be lower for certain models, like the Ford Edge or Ford Explorer.Â
“Ford is a no-brainer,” said Alex Black, chief marketing officer at EpicVIN. “Newer Escapes and F-150s just stand the test. They’ve ironed out many of the older tech glitches, and you’re not constantly racing to the shop. Parts are plentiful, which makes repair cheap and quick.”
