Buying a new car can cost a lot of money — and it’s important to protect that investment long after you drive the car off the lot. While that new car smell is amazing, keeping your car looking and feeling new takes more than just regular car washes.

Chris Pyle, a mechanic and auto expert with JustAnswer, knows firsthand how a few smart moves right from the start can keep your new ride in great shape.

Here’s what he suggests you do to protect your investment.

Plan Ahead for Insurance

Before you even step foot on a lot, you should have a few things sorted, including your insurance.

“Make sure you have the right car insurance that will pay out the correct replacement value in the event of a full loss,” Pyle said. “Most new car owners are upside down on day one, so think about a worst-case scenario.”

Opt For Some Preventive Protection

Several simple steps can prevent damage before it occurs. “If the seats and floors are carpet and fabric, look into Scotchgard to prevent stains,” Pyle explained.

For exterior protection, try to avoid putting your car in situations where it’s more likely to be scratched or dented. “Get on your walking shoes. Park further away from the retail store door to hide from door dings and shopping carts,” Pyle said.

Learn the Ins and Outs of Your New Car

Pyle said that if you want your car to stay in tip-top condition, you need to learn about your car and follow the guidelines from the company you bought it from.

“Read the maintenance manual and actually do the steps as the manufacturer lists,” he said. This simple step will make sure your car runs for years to come.

Maintain Car Rules

Pyle also said you should set clear and consistent car rules from the beginning. “Make a rule for yourself and others: No food and only bottled water in the car,” he said. In addition to those rules, you might consider investing in towels to put down for beach days or dog runs.

Thinking ahead about how to keep the car looking brand-new will save you money in the long run.
