If you have a car, you need auto insurance — at least in most states. With the exception of New Hampshire and some flexibility in Virginia, car insurance is mandated in every state.

Auto insurance is important, because you’re liable if you cause a car accident. Being fully insured can protect your assets while also helping provide you with financial support if you’re the victim of an accident caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver.

Insurify, a digital insurance agent that connects users with real-time car insurance quotes from more than 100 providers, analyzed current auto insurance prices in numerous states. The study included full-coverage policies, with bodily limits up to $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident, property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000, and comprehensive and collision coverage deductibles of $1,000. The data analyzed by Insurify represented the median yearly coast of full-coverage auto insurance for drivers ages 20-70, with a clean driving record and average or better credit.

The price of car insurance can vary based on several factors, such as driving experience, driving record, a vehicle’s safety features and location — including your state of residence. Per Insurify data, here’s a look at the annual cost to fully insure your car in the 40 states for which data was available, as of November 2024.
