A fair price. A touch of luxury. And more often than other brands, a Chevrolet. They’re all items that car buyers from Generation X tend to hone in on, according to recent studies.
“Generation X’s vehicle selections reflect a blend of luxury, adventure and reliability,” said John Martell, Carvana’s associate director for category planning and analytics. “These choices indicate a desire for vehicles that offer both style and functionality.”
According to the latest rankings from Insurify, Chevrolet ranks first in ownership among Gen X, the demographic group born between 1965 and 1980. Chevys are also the most popular brand in 28 U.S. states, well ahead of Ford (10), Toyota (6), Honda (3), Nissan (2) and Subaru (1). Insurify’s full list is included below.
Insurify’s rankings of the most popular makes among Gen X include the Chevy Silverado in the No. 5 spot. The Ford F-Series pickup leads the way, followed by the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord.
Additional data from Cars.com points to Gen Xers and baby boomers being more worried about getting a fair deal than younger groups like millennials and Gen Z, who tend to list finding the right car for their needs as a higher priority.
Gen X car buyers also tend to emphasize brand loyalty. In a study released earlier this year by Cox Automotive, 21% of Gen X buyers listed brand as the top reason for their vehicle selection. That matches millennials for the highest total among generations.
