Americans are paying some of the highest healthcare costs in the world. That reality has pushed many patients to look beyond U.S. borders for care that’s not only affordable but also safe and high quality.
Medical tourism used to feel risky. Today, in the right countries and clinics, it’s often a well-structured, carefully managed option that can save tens of thousands of dollars. Here are five countries experts think Americans can cut medical bills dramatically.
Spain for Elective and Diagnostic Procedures
“For years, Spain has been one of the few countries that I can consistently recommend for Americans seeking out elective and diagnostic procedures with a significant reduction in price,” said Kiara DeWitt, certified neurology nurse and head of clinical operations at Medical Director Co. “A procedure like a knee arthroscopy, which can cost upwards of $18,000 in the U.S., can be closer to $6,000 to $7,000 out of pocket, including facility fees.”
DeWitt said hospital networks in Spain must adhere to the European Union’s stringent medical standards and physician training mirrors what you’d find in the United States. Plus, major metropolitan areas offer English-speaking healthcare teams, reducing the risk of miscommunication during your care.
Hungary for Dental and Musculoskeletal Procedures
Hungary is one of the most underutilized destinations for dental and musculoskeletal procedures, despite its strong infrastructure for international patients. DeWitt pointed to Budapest alone, which hosts hundreds of clinics offering state-of-the-art equipment and transparent pricing.
“Packages for full mouth dental restoration that can range up to $45,000 stateside can fall below $15,000,” DeWitt said. “The overall safety of these procedures is linked to having them done at one of the centralized clinics that are able to perform these high-volume procedures on a daily basis.” Recovery costs are also manageable, with lodging averaging around $100 per night.
Italy for IVF
Italy and other European countries offer high-quality fertility treatments at significant savings. In vitro fertilization (IVF) costs roughly half what Americans pay domestically, with the same standards of medical ethics and sanitation you’d expect in the United States.
“IVF in Italy will cost about half as much as in the U.S. The standard of care in Italy is excellent,” said Melanie Musson, finance and insurance expert with Quote.com. You don’t have to be any more concerned with medical ethics and sanitation in Italy than you would in the U.S. Also, IVF costs are similar across Europe, so any European country could be a good option.”
India for Complex Surgery
For those willing to plan carefully, India offers the most dramatic cost reductions, especially for complex surgeries. DeWitt noted that many private hospitals rival U.S. academic centers in technology and expertise, especially for cardiac and orthopedic care.
“A coronary artery bypass, which can cost close to $120,000 in the U.S., can fall between $8,000 to $10,000 out of pocket, including hospital fees,” DeWitt explained. “Dedicated international patient coordinators screen you before the trip and lay out your post-discharge plans with the utmost precision and care.” Longer stays of 21 to 30 days are typically recommended to ensure safe healing before flying home.
Mexico for Dental Care
Dental care is one of the most common reasons Americans seek treatment abroad and Mexico remains a popular choice. Musson cautioned that not all regions are equal, but well-known border towns have built reputations for safe, advanced dental care.
“You can have some procedures done for a quarter of the cost of having it done in the U.S.,” Musson said. “Dental insurance is notoriously limited, so even if you have insurance, it’s often far cheaper to go to Mexico.”
