Mmm, can you smell that? That’s the aroma of the Thanksgiving meal you’re going to be devouring in just a few days. Oh, and do you hear that? That’s the sound of your wallet opening to spend on all those turkey day essentials — including the turkey.
If you’re hosting Thanksgiving dinner or attending a Thanksgiving potluck, you’re probably well aware of just how pricey this meal of humbled gratitude can be. And if you’re on a budget, it’s really important to do all that you can to trim costs. To save money on Thanksgiving grocery necessities, stop by Walmart and consider the following seven standout deals.
Meat Thermometer
If you’re making a turkey, it’s critical that you get the temperature just right — not just for taste, but more importantly for safety. You will need a special thermometer designed for food to do this. The Taylor Stainless Steel Digital Folding Probe Meat Thermometer with Blue Backlight Display is on sale at Walmart for $9.28, down from $12.29. Consider that a very similar item at Target is $14.99.
Turkey Baster
To keep your turkey juicy, you’re going to need to baste it periodically while it’s cooking. For that you will need what is unsurprisingly called a turkey baster. At Walmart, the Farberware Professional Dishwasher Safe 3-in-1 Plastic and Rubber Baster in Red costs $8.97. A slightly bigger device that has the same functions costs $19.99 at Target — and that’s on sale.
Brown Gravy Mix
If you’re making brown gravy not from scratch, premade brown gravy mix is a must for your Thanksgiving shopping list. Isn’t it rather astonishing that this Great Value Brown Gravy Mix at Walmart is only 32 cents (down from 48 cents), while the same amount of brown gravy mix goes for 95 cents at Target? What an expensive difference a brand name (McCormick) makes.
Philadelphia Cream Cheese
Speaking of brand names, when it comes to cream cheese, we all know Philadelphia, a pioneer in this niche space. Cream cheese is a must for a number of desserts you may be serving on Thanksgiving. At Walmart, you can get a Philadelphia Original Cream Cheese, 2 count for $5.18, down from $5.74. At Target, you can get half of that (only one 8-oz brick) same product for $3.39.
Whole Turkeys
Target sells whole turkeys under its Good & Gather brand. One option is a 5- to 9-pound bird at $1.99 a pound. At Walmart, you can get a Butterball 10- to 16-pound turkey for $1.04 a pound, which may result in significant savings.
Stove Top Stuffing
Stove Top stuffing is only a penny more at Target, but if you’re already at Walmart, might as well add this to your grocery cart. The Stove Top Turkey Stuffing Mix Side Dish costs $1.98 at Walmart, down from $2.58.
Premade Pumpkin Pie
What’s a Thanksgiving meal without pumpkin pie for dessert? Pick up a premade one at Walmart for $4.57 — a competitively low price for this seasonal must-have.
