If you find Halloween decorations hard to resist, you’re not alone. In 2023, 77% of people celebrating the holiday planned to purchase festive decorations, according to National Retail Federation data.
The more Halloween decor you have, the merrier — but there’s no need to overspend. You might think Walmart is the cheapest place to find Halloween items, but Marshalls has plenty of hard-to-beat steals.
Whether you’re starting from scratch or adding to an already robust collection of Halloween items, stop at your local Marshalls — or browse the online selection — before purchasing decor at Walmart. While the two stores don’t have identical items, you can find notably similar pieces that will likely feel interchangeable.
Shopping at Marshalls can allow you to better stick to your budget while scoring even more Halloween items. Here’s a look at six Halloween items you can save money on by simply shopping at Marshalls instead of Walmart.
Glittered Halloween Tree
- Marshalls price: $16.99
- Walmart price: $35.39
Sleek and spooky, a glittered Halloween tree pairs nicely with any festive decor for the holiday. However, there’s no need to pay more than double the price for a 2-foot-tall black glittered tree by shopping at Walmart.
Featuring orange LED lights, the Marshalls version is part of the Martha Stewart line. From the brand Northlight, the Walmart option has 40 micro fairy orange LED bulbs and is adorned with glitter and felt bats.
Sure, the bats are a nice touch, but probably not worth paying more than twice the price.
Skeleton Hands Bowl
- Marshalls price: $16.99
- Walmart price: $23.26
Serving up the creepy for Halloween, a skeleton hands bowl is great for parties or as decor. Marshalls and Walmart both sell their own unique version of this classic, but the off-price department store offers a better value.
Featuring a glitter accent and crackled design, the Marshalls version is predominately black, with a diameter of 8 inches and a height of 6 inches. Mainly white and made of resin, the Walmart option is just over 6 inches tall.
Ghost Hand Towels
- Marshalls price: $12.99
- Walmart price: $22.20
Do accessorize your bathroom for Halloween, but don’t overspend on hand towels. You can get a set of two black-and-white ghost hand towels at both Marshalls and Walmart, so choose the cheaper option.
Adorned with festive ghost prints, the Caro Home ghost towels at Marshalls are made from cotton and are machine washable. Equally in the Halloween spirit, the two towels in the Walmart set — also machine washable — feature one spooky ghost but are almost double the price.
Skull Throw
- Marshalls price: $16.99
- Walmart price: $21.98
Functional decor, a skull throw will warm you up while adding a touch of Halloween to your space. This can be a great find, but don’t overpay for it.
Made from premium flannel material, the Walmart version is machine washable and measures 50 inches by 60 inches. Also soft and plush, the Marshalls option is polyester — also machine washable — and slightly larger at 50 inches by 70 inches.
Haunted House Cookie Jar
- Marshalls price: $29.99
- Walmart price: $47.50
Adorably spooky, a haunted house cookie jar makes for fantastic Halloween kitchen decor. You probably do need one of these, but don’t forget to comparison shop.
Covered with ghosts, a pumpkin and a black cat, the Marshalls option is ceramic, measuring 8 inches wide, 6 inches long and 9 inches high. Also ceramic, the Walmart alternative is similarly sized — 8.75 inches wide, 5.5 inches deep and 9.25 inches high — and is adorned with pumpkins, a ghost and a bat.
Creepy Candelabra
- Marshalls price: $14.99
- Walmart price: $33.99 (originally $41.99)
Chic and spooky, a Halloween candelabra is perfect for a dining room table, mantel or credenza. Both the eerie design of the candelabra and the tall taper candles used with it create the kind of spine-chilling ambience associated with the holiday.
White with black accents, Walmart’s option is a 12-inch-high skeleton candelabra from the National Tree Company that holds three candles. Similar in height — 11.75 inches — the Martha Stewart skull taper candelabra from Marshalls also fits three taper candles.
Prices and availability are accurate as of Sept. 13, 2024, and may vary by location.
