Many seniors are unaware of discounts available to them because they’re not always advertised. These hidden savings can range from small to large and vary by location, income and the company offering the discount.Â
From retail and groceries to travel, insurance and more, here’s how much senior discounts actually leave in your wallet each year.
$84 Annual Prime Membership Discount
Seniors who receive government assistance, such as SNAP benefits, are eligible for 50% off an Amazon Prime membership that regularly costs $14.99 per month. The membership costs $6.99 per month or $84 per year for online purchases and includes free shipping on Amazon Prime-eligible items.Â
20% CVS Veterans Discount
If you’re a veteran or active duty military member, you and your family can receive a 20% discount with the WeSalute + subscription. Subscribers receive a discount on brand-name products such as CVS Health and Minute Clinic orders and free shipping. Prescriptions and gift cards are excluded.
25% AARP Membership Benefit
An AARP membership costs $15 a year. However, the membership pays for itself many times over. Members can receive $40 off a Walmart+ membership, up to 35% off car rental rates and big discounts on restaurants, insurance, retail, mobile phones, hotels, travel and prescriptions. According to Money Talk News, members can save up to $450 on dining a year.
Retail Store Discounts
Many retailers offer senior discounts daily or on certain days of the week, depending on the store. We thought these were worth mentioning.
- Kohl’s: People ages 60 and over can receive a 15% discount on in-store purchases on Wednesdays. Not available for online orders.
- Goodwill Senior Savings Day: The store offers a 10% discount on all purchases on Tuesdays.
- Walgreens Seniors Day: Shoppers ages 55 and older receive 20% off eligible items for in-store and online purchases with a Walgreens account. Days can vary depending on stores.
- Michaels: The store offers 10% discount for people ages 55 and up on in-store and online purchases every day. The savings require enrolling in a Michael’s Rewards card.
Medicare Advantage Grocery AllowanceÂ
Seniors enrolled in Medicare Advantage are eligible for a grocery allowance. Benefits are loaded onto a prepaid card and vary by insurance company. Some offer a benefit of $25 to $75 per month ($300 to $900 per year). Others are paid $150 to $300 quarterly, equally $600 or $1,200 and are issued every three months.Â
Other insurance companies like UnitedHealthcare offer Medicare Advantage plan holders OTC (over-the-counter) card benefits that can be used for over-the-counter medicines, food and utility bill credits. Check with your insurance provider to learn more, and always review your health plan’s benefits and costs to decide whether Medicare Advantage is right option for your health needs.
