Recognizing your unconscious spending habits can help you stop throwing money at things you don’t need. And with household debt at an all-time high, according to the Federal Reserve, looking at where you can save is an important part of financial management. It’s not about depriving yourself or missing out; it’s about getting smarter with your money.
In a recent Instagram video, millennial money coach Rachel Covert talked about unconscious spending and shared her advice on rethinking these purchases to save cash.
Impulse Purchases From Amazon
Impulse buys pile up fast, especially with that “Buy Now” button. Covert suggested waiting two weeks before purchasing to see if you still want it.
Snack Organizers
“They came in a box,” Covert said. You really don’t need another container to organize your individually wrapped snacks, because they’re already contained.
Pre-Vacation Shopping
Shopping for an outfit for every day of your vacation just creates clutter. You’ll probably buy stuff during the trip anyway — no need to fill up your suitcase unnecessarily.
Skincare Products Promoted by Influencers
Seen a must-have serum? Covert calls out this trap, saying that you probably already have something similar, and if your skin’s acting up, it’s likely from all the random stuff you’re smearing on it.
Clothing Lookalikes
Dupes seem like a great deal, but if you wouldn’t pay full price for the original, it’s just another unnecessary purchase.
Sale Items You Wouldn’t Pay Full Price For
If you’re only buying something because it’s on sale, it’s probably not worth it. Covert suggested saving your money for things you’d still value at full price.
Wedding Outfit
“You’ve already been to plenty of weddings. Just wear a dress you already own. No one cares,” she said.
Pretty Containers
Your stuff is already in containers — don’t waste money on Instagram-worthy acrylic ones that will just end up in the landfill.
In a post accompanying the video, Covert wrote that these unconscious purchases aren’t just taking up space in your home — they’re also draining your finances.
“That’s trip to Europe money, down payment on a house money,” she noted.
And the good news? You can stop.
“You can unlearn these money habits that are keeping your bank accounts empty and your stress levels uncomfortably high,” Covert said.
By eliminating these unnecessary purchases, you can save for the things that truly matter — whether it’s investing in stocks or snagging those Taylor Swift tickets in Switzerland.
