Summer is around the corner, and if you need a wardrobe refresh, Macy’s is the ideal place to shop. From major designer labels to its private brands, Macy’s offers consumers a wide range of high quality apparel at competitive prices. While you can find affordable options, there are ways to save even more.
You can maximize your savings by knowing a few key details that will unlock deals, saving you $100 or more on summer closet staples. Here’s how:
Compare Prices
If you’re shopping in person at Macy’s, take a couple of minutes to check the prices online. Comparative shopping is an easy way to keep more money in your wallet.
“When you’re in-store, look up the item online on your phone,” Trae Bodge, Smart Shopping Expert at True Trae suggested. “If the dot com price is lower, the cashier will honor the lower price.”
How much you’ll save: “It’s tough to say, but if you find a blouse that is $10 cheaper online, you’ll save $10,” Bodge stated.
Understand the Price Tags
Macy’s offers different discount deals and uses a colored-tired price tag system to indicate items that are on sale:
- White Tag: Regular priced new items that just hit the floor and likely won’t go on sale unless there’s a promo.
- Yellow Tag: If you see an item with a yellow tag, you’re in luck — it’s on clearance and it’s a rock-bottom price. This is the lowest price you’ll find before it’s removed from Macy’s inventory.
- Blue Tag: Anything with a blue tag means a price reduction, but not as low as yellow tagged items. If the item doesn’t sell, it will eventually get a yellow tag, which means more savings — but you could risk losing the item if it sells.
How much you’ll save: You can get rock-bottom prices by simply memorizing which tags indicate certain price points.
Shop the Outlet
There’s no need to pay full price when you don’t have to. In addition to discounted prices and store promos, Macy’s has an outlet where you can find good deals.
“You can save a bundle at Macy’s outlet store Macy’s Backstage,” Bodge explained. “Items will be discounted at Backstage, but make sure to hit the clearance racks first. That’s where the best bargains will be. “
How much you’ll save: “It’s hard to say how much, but clearance racks can have discounts as deep as 70%,” according to Bodge.
Join Star Rewards
Macy’s offers customers a loyalty program where members can earn points and rewards.
Bodge explained, “Members of the free Star Rewards program ‘Star Money’ save on all purchases (except gift cards). Plus, there are additional perks and savings, and surprises. Level up your savings by using the Macy’s store card.”
How much you’ll save: “Once you earn 1,000 points, you’ll receive $10 in Star Money,” per Bodge.
Buy Discounted Gift Cards
A clever way to save money shopping is buying Macy’s gift cards at online retailers that offer them at reduced prices. According to Bodge, “Sometimes you can find discounted Macy’s gift cards, and then shop with them to save money. GiftCardGranny.com is a great resource for discounted gift cards for Macy’s and other popular retailers.”
How much you’ll save: She explained, ” It depends — sometimes it’s a couple bucks or a percentage of the gift card. The benefits vary and are often more generous around the holidays.”
Upping your summer wardrobe doesn’t have to be expensive, especially when taking advantage of the different ways to save at Macy’s. To rack up more discounts, use Macy’s coupons and sign up for emails that alert you to new sales. For first time subscribers you’ll get 25% off your next order.
