It’s always tempting to look for the best deal, but some things are simply worth splurging on. When deciding where to spend — even if you’re on a budget — consider where quality really does matter and where experiences are truly unique.
Take all factors into account because you don’t want to splurge on things that don’t merit the extra cost.
A Good Cooling Mattress
- Novosbed: $999
You actually can put a price on a good night’s sleep. Queen-size mattresses costing between $700 and $1,800 had a 74 percent owner-satisfaction rating, but those costing less only had a 68 percent satisfaction rating, according to mattress review website Sleep Like the Dead. Meanwhile, more expensive mattresses have a longer lifespan.
Mattresses costing $700 or less last an average of 5.3 years, and those in the $700 to $1,800 range had an average lifespan of seven years. Relatively affordable, the Novosbed was rated as the best cooling mattress by Reviews.com for its top layer — “two inches of aerated foam, with holes punched through the surface to increase sink and airflow.”
- Bose QuietComfort 35 Wireless Headphones II: $349.00
Studies have shown that listening to music can improve your overall mood, so it’s worth investing in headphones that will give you a high-quality listening experience. Review site The Wirecutter rated the Bose QuietComfort 35 Series II wireless headphones as a runner-up to best noise-canceling headphones. The foldable, comfortable-to-wear headphones can help cancel outside noise to allow you to better enjoy your playlist of choice.
A Top-of-the-Line Refrigerator
- Whirlpool Double Drawer French Door Refrigerator: $3,239
Refrigerators last an average of 13 years, so if you’re going to be stuck with something for that long, you might as well invest in an appliance that you like. When selecting a refrigerator, Reviews.com recommended choosing a size and style that best works for you.
The review site chose the Whirlpool Double Drawer French Door Refrigerator model as the best French-door style refrigerator for its fashionable look, high-tech features and space efficiency. If you splurge on a refrigerator, save on the electricity bill needed to power it with these energy-saving tips.
A High-End Chef’s Knife
- MAC MTH-80 Professional Series 8-inch Chef’s Knife With Dimples: $144.95
A sharp and effective chef’s knife will save you time and frustration — it’s a useful kitchen tool you’ll love. The multi-use tool helps you slice, dice, mince and debone. It’s worth spending a bit more for a high-quality knife that will keep its sharpness and a keen edge. Food & Wine named the MAC MTH-80 Professional Series 8-Inch Chef’s Knife With Dimples its best overall pick due to its razor-like blade and comfortable shape.
- Citizens of Humanity Jeans: Prices vary by style, but men can pay $248 and women $371.69 for a pair of jeans.
Designer jeans might cost more, but you get what you pay for. They use higher quality raw materials, take more time to make and use highly skilled seamstresses to make them, according to the fashion website Who What Wear.
The editors of Who What Wear named Citizens of Humanity one of the brands of designer jeans they’ve been investing in for years. Although you shouldn’t scrimp when it comes to buying jeans, there are other clothing items you can save money on like undershirts and swimwear.
A Vacuum to Help Fight Your Allergies or Asthma
- Miele Complete C3 Calima: $699
Vacuum cleaners are another product that has a lifespan that can vary with quality. Many vacuums lose their cleaning ability if they are not properly maintained. A high-quality vacuum will work well on different surfaces; pick up pet hair, dust and debris in fewer passes and is easy to maneuver. The Wirecutter review website named the Miele Complete C3 Calima the best vacuum for allergies or asthma because, “It’s a bagged vacuum, which traps dust and dander better than bagless, and it’s one of the tightest-sealed machines out there.”
- Ray-Ban Aviator G-15 Polarized Lenses: $153
Polarized sunglasses usually cost more than standard lenses, but they make it easier to see in very bright conditions and can reduce eyestrain. Taking good care of your eyes is always worth a little extra cash.
- Marriott Hotel Signature Sheet Set: From $217
Top hotels are known for providing quality bedding, which can give you the most comfortable sleeping experience you’ll ever have. Bring that feeling home with the Marriott Hotel Signature Sheet Set, rated the best hotel quality sheets by Good Housekeeping, which noted that the “percale weave fabric proved strong, had an excellent fit, and felt soft.”
Quality sheets might set you back more than the standard fare, but you can’t overvalue sleep. Adequate sleep is necessary for proper brain function, emotional well-being and physical health, according to the National Institutes of Health.
A Powerful Blender
- Vitamix A3500: $599.95
What makes the Vitamix blender worth its hefty price tag is its reliability. Vitamix is the high-end blender brand least likely to encounter problems by the fourth year of ownership, and owners reported significantly fewer problems than with other brands, according to Consumer Reports. It’s also extremely versatile — it can be used to make smoothies, soups, dips, spreads and frozen desserts.
A Smart Bassinet
- SNOO: $1,295
New parents are notoriously sleep deprived. Even when their little ones do fall asleep, it can be hard to relax.
Invented by Dr. Harvey Karp, the SNOO assists parents as a virtual night nurse for the first six months and averages out to a cost of approximately $7 per day. This smart bassinet won The Bump Best of Baby Tech Awards in the baby safety category at CES 2017. Considering it soothes the baby, keeps them safer and allows parents to sleep at least one extra hour per night, it’s no wonder parents willing to pay the high price tag.
Luxurious Face Moisturizer
- La Mer The Moisturizing Soft Lotion: $346.99
You only have one face, so it’s important to treat it right. Named one of the 26 best face moisturizers of all time by Allure editors, La Mer The Moisturizing Soft Lotion is the pampering your skin deserves.
“It’s thick without being suffocating. And it’s quick to absorb yet still supremely hydrating,” according to Allure.
Top-of-the-Line Espresso Maker
- Breville Barista Express: $499.99
If you’re like many people, your daily caffeine fix is more elevated than a simple cup of coffee. However, the average cost of a Starbucks tall latte is $2.75 in the U.S., according to ValuePenguin.
Sure, the Breville Barista Express is expensive, but it pays for itself after 189 lattes. Wired named it one of the eight best latte and cappuccino machines, noting, “you’d be hard-pressed finding a sturdier, more authentic latte and cappuccino machine that doesn’t cost thousands of dollars.”
- Travelpro Platinum Elite 29” Expandable Spinner Suiter Suitcase: $288.99
Traveling can be stressful enough, without having to physically carry your heavy bag around or worry your cheap suitcase will break. Wirecutter’s pick for best-checked luggage, the Travelpro Platinum Elite 29 inch — or the 25-inch version, if you travel light — will give you one less thing to worry about.
Wirecutter praised the bag’s “hard-wearing nylon that’s both sleek and durable,” and noted it’s easy to maneuver, due to its “height-adjustable handle and magnetically locking MagnaTrac wheels.”
The Finest Wine Glass
- Zalto “Denk’art” Universal Glass: $99
Drinking great wine is an experience, and the glass holding the liquid is part of it. While it probably won’t make the wine taste better, holding a quality glass in your hand could impact your perception of it.
“If you can afford it, owning an exquisite set of glasses like the Zalto Universals can be a joy, even if you only use them for special occasions,” wrote The New York Times. Priced at $59 each, it’s probably best not to use these as everyday wine glasses.
Luxurious Bubble Bath
- Library of Flowers by Margot Elena Bubble Bath: From $27.99
If you’re like many people, you firmly believe there’s no better way to relax than a long, hot bubble bath. Technically speaking, generic suds will do the trick, but there’s something to be said about soaking in luxury.
Highlighted on the 2018 list of Oprah’s favorite things, Library of Flowers by Margot Elena Bubble Bath comes in three scents — Forget Me Not, True Vanilla and Willow & Water. If Oprah puts her stamp of approval on it, you know it’s pretty amazing.
The Best Reusable Water Bottle
- Bindle Bottle: $39
Another item on Oprah’s 2018 list of favorite things, the Bindle Bottle is a vacuum-sealed reusable beverage holder with a storage compartment. This dual-function bottle holds all your small essentials, so you only have to keep track of one thing — plus, Oprah likes it.
Stylish and convenient, the Bindle Bottle is also eco-friendly. Assuming you drink four plastic bottles of water daily, switching to a reusable water bottle would save 1,460 plastic bottles per year, according to Arcadia Power.
The Best Men's Razor
- MERKUR Futur Adjustable Double Edge Saftey Razor: $62.50
In life, you get what you pay for, and that includes razors. If your razor is too dull to do the trick or constantly gives you razor burn, it’s time for an upgrade.
The 2018 AskMen Readers’ Choice Award for Best Single Blade Razor and Best Overall Razor, the Merkur Furtur Adjustable Double Edge Saftey Razor is an investment worth making. AskMen referred to it as, “a modern take on the classic double-edged razor that blends full adjustability, balance and style into an ergonomic design that works for both righties as well as lefties.”
